Where do you get your live rock?

Lately I've been buying uncured live rock wholesale in boxes straight from a distributor. They are the Fiji Ultra Premium and I get them the day they arrive.. However, I've never seen any critters that are alive in the rock...especially those mantis that everybody seems to be getting. The other kind of live rock that I've purchased is the Florida Aquacultured which seem to be better. I'll need some more rocks soon and don't know what to get.

Re: Where do you get your live rock?

The florida aquacultured rock is basically dead rock that is thrown into a saltwater canal and left until it's covered with stuff. In this canal are mud loving algae and critters... if you choose this route, check it very, very carefully for nuisance algaes and critters.

Re: Where do you get your live rock?

from what ive heard the people that collect live rock like fiji have had to really scrub the rocks because of changes in laws and that has cut down on the amount of live critters and corals that are seen on the rock

if you want mantis shrimp in your rock i heard that the carribean and florida lr has a lot

this info is just what i have heard im not 100%sure it is true so take it with a grain of salt........whatever that means lol

little too much caffine this morning

Re: Where do you get your live rock?

Well...I kinda like the pest algae and critters. Everybody who's seen my tanks are always amazed by the FL stuff...especially the Turkey Wings that comes with it. My Fiji stuff still looks like dead rock after 6 months....as in nothing growing out of it...not even aiptasia.

Re: Where do you get your live rock?

I have Lalo uncured, Fiji LFS cured and Caribbean aquacultured rock. If you want alot of HH'ers then Aquacultured is the way to go but the best looking and most porous rock is Pacific LR.

BTW most of the HH'ers from Florida rock don't usually survive more than a year.

Re: Where do you get your live rock?

I've collected so many kinds over the years I won't know what to call it really.Fiji,Pukani,AquaCult.,Tonga,Branch, if it looked good to me it ended up in my tank.?combination rock?Lots of interesting HHer's but never a mantis, thanks lord.I don't really think I'd appreiciate it unless it was in a species tank.Best of luck Doni.
