Lightbulb Your light level

I'm just wondering about my light level. I was working in the tank and had to lift my Aquamedic to have enough room to reach the bottom; mine being 24" deep. I left it like that even after, and notice my temp spike was less and this is my question, what level is your MH or light at. Mine are usually at 6" above, but now they're at 8" and i see a difference in heat transfer to my tank. So what do you thing the level of the fixture could be without compremising the light efficiency.

Re: Your light level

Mine are probably about 4" off the top of the water. I have a chiller so I don't really care about temps and the tank is 32" deep so it needs to be lower.

Re: Your light level

I have an outer orbit fixture with 3-250W MH and 8 T-5's over my tank. I used the legs that came with it to stand it on my tank, so it's about 4" above the water. The water stays pretty cool, I'm guessing form the mesh tops. I have about 1 to 1.5 gallons of evaporation per day.

Re: Your light level

I have never used MH lighting, but most people like to run them somewhere around the 6 inch mark. As long as there is a shield on the light itself you will be fine, but if its an open bulb you run the risk of blowing it up. Do you have fans that run over the top of the tank?

Re: Your light level

I just got a pico and I'm also checking out JBJ Viper 70w. How's that working for you DendroGuru?

Also, let me know if anyone passing by here has a used one, I would be interested in buying it. Thanks

You might want to check the for sale/trade sections around the forums, you can find one for pretty cheap I would assume. Now trying to thread jack either but you are going to use a 70 watt MH on something in the pico range? What size tank, that may be a bad bad idea haha

Re: Your light level

I have a 20" 150W MH SunPod over my 10 gallon frag tank. It's an open top and doesn't really seem to heat up the water at all for some reason.
