How do you run your circulation

There are lots of different methods of circulating water in a reef tank. What method do you use? What are the advantages and disadvantages of your method?

PS....YOU CAN PICK MORE THAN ONE CHOICE.

Myself i run the following,

-Little Giant 3mdxq on Closed loop for my SPS side of the tank only
- i run two Maxijets at either side of the tank blowing behind the rocks
- I run a Pressure pump rated at 1500GPH at 5 feed head through my SWQD to each side of the tank

it all works for me.

Powerheads on wavemakers, Closed loop with SQWD, hang on filter (occasionally for carbon use) and Mag drive pumps for main sump return.

Hi
On my 30 I have a mag 9.5 running a closed loop to a scwd,1 maxijet 1200 piped down behind the rocks, and a rio 2100 pumping back from my fuge.I have a lot of flow.It took a while for me to get all lines in the right spots so I dont blow sand everywhere.
Thanks

Dave, did you know you can vote for more than one?

I have a closed loop - run by an ampmaster 3000 into a Hayward Motorized Ball Valve, on a timer.....switching about every 5 minutes or so. My return is just a return...not counting on it for any kind of flow....just getting the water back to the tank.

Well when I get my setup running it will be the following for circulation:

1. Will have 2- 1.5" drains to a AMP Master 2100 pump and return will be 4- 3/4" in-lets to the tank on the CLS.

2. Return from Sump will be a 9.5 Mag pump with 2- 3/4" in-lets to tank.

This will be on a 60 gallon cube tank and advantage is great circulation for sps corals.

I run 4 MJ-1200s for about 1200gph of circulation
I also run 2 Seio 820's for about 1700-1800gph of circulation.
And my return is a Mag 18 running split lines at about 1000gph total.

So, I have about 3900-4000gph of circulation in a 120 cube... about 32-33x turnover per hour.

I think the benefit of running multiple powerheads is the fact that they're a lot easier to position than a CLS where you have to know in advance where you'll want the flow to go. Also, redundancy means that if one pump fails, you don't lose all your flow.

The drawback is the fact that you have multiple pumps as multiple heat sources in the tank, raising your tank temperature... though I've heard of people's tanks climbing in temp even after adding an external CLS pump.

There's also the aesthetic issue, but I don't really notice the powerheads being there... they're just part of the system.

I use power heads attached to a couple spray bars in the tank to give more tubulence to the water rather then having a couple powerful streams for the animals to contend with and I can dirrect a couple small currents across the animals that seem to like slightly more current.
