Tank Temperature

Wondering what you REAL tank temp is? Mine is at 86 right now and i am installing MH's in the next week (today if the sockets would have arrived....UPS )

Wondering if I will have a problem:

Current 4-96 watt PC with no fans at all

Installing 2 250 watt MH's with 4 fans...2 in and 2 out.

Can i get your thoughts?

But i have no fans blowing the heat away...do you think once the halides go in and i install 4 fans that the temp will rise?

install the fans immediately if you can and get the temp down ASAP. 86 is very high and stressful to a reef, also it lowers the disolved oxygen.

once you see the temp with the fans, then you can get a better judgement on tempurature affect of halides.

I put a fan on the 40 breeder sump....just got the halides today and the hood is just about complete. Where would you place the fans? I have 4 and i was thinkin 2 in and 2out....but all in the back...do they need to blow across? Also, how do the Pc stack up against on the MH's?

Thanks

i have a 4" fan on both sides blowing across a 250 hqi. one sucking in and one blowing out. seems to work pretty good. tank only raises 1.5 degrees with the mh and 196w pc on.

WOW . . . 86. That's REALLY high. We had a heetwave recently and my friends tank went from 81 to 87 and he lost half his stock. Please get your temp sorted before you even turn on your MH . . . . you are risking everything. Get the tank running at 80-81 Max before you even consider turning on those babes. I know how tempting it is to get them up and running but you need to get the temp down, then turn on the MH and just spend a day at home checking the temp every hour until you know your not heading for a crash.

If it's an enclosed hood, 2 in, 2 out is good. If it's not enlcosed, I would go for 4 fans blowing in. Remember, fans blowing out only last half as long as fans blowing in . . . . Brucey.

PS, you'll notice a large increase in evaporation as well so be ready for top up too.

man i'll have to agree 86 without halides. you need to get the tank temp down first like witt said. all i can say is if the temp is that high now your going to be in big trouble with halides even with the fans your not going to get the temp below the 86 you have now probally higher. may i suggest a chiller.

I agree, 86 is too high to add halides to. How much did the fan on the sump help? I have 4 fans blowing out of my hood. Air blowing into the hood & on the bulbs would change the temperature of the bulb. Try and get sump area first before blowing air into the canopy. You can also try doing some other cooling techniques. I thought these were very interesting - the first has a description of using a 5 gallon bucket filled with ice - run a coil of tubing through it and take a power head...pump water into the tubing....return back to the sump. Temp help - I believe it is on page 2. Other people have used rotating frozen 2 liter bottles, frozen RO/DI, etc. Is the room your tank is in air conditioned?

Keep in mind that you want to minimize the amount of temperature change in a daily swing. 2 degrees per day max is the recommendation. Once you ght the lights on, and see how much they're going to push up the temps, then adjust your heater to just a tiny bit less than that temperature. It would be better for the health of the fish to have the tank at a constant 84 than to have it bounce from 79 to 84 then back to 79 with the lighting cycle every day.

very true....the lights are coming on now so i am watching it.

How much of a heat increase should i see by replacin 4-96 watt PC's with 2 250 watt MH's (keep fans out)

I plan to put the 4 fans in the new hood...i'm finishing up the staining now.

Thanks

Probably at least a couple of degrees WITH fans...much more without them.
