What my LFS does is run copper and UV on their FO system and they will hold them for a minimum of a week before they sell them the problem is with especially crypto you need a minimum of 4 weeks of treatment so you'd have to Q and treat for at least for another 3 weeks.

Re: Do you Quarantine?

I haven't always quarantined or dipped my corals. After many dead colonies of zoas appeared to rot away and too many red bug infested acros later. I now do and always will quarantine and dip. Fortunately for fish I don't buy many.

Re: Do you Quarantine?

I've only quarantined a tang, but after all the effert, the lil' guy got sucked up into a powerhead after the strainer fell off one night, so the last one I bought, got the usall drip for a hour.
I never quarantined a coral.
But I do drip methode on the inverts and hardy fish.

Re: Do you Quarantine?

I do QT my fish it looks like it's a unique thing, I even QT new feeders, I found out the hard way.
I used to pick up feeders and just dump a couple in figuring what the heck theyll be dead in a minute any way. I lost several thousand $$ worth of fish that way one year.

I use Malachite Green on all the FW fish I bring in I give them a dip in that then I put them in salt water at about .0025-.0028 SG untill they start to doze off or about 1/2 HR (not all FW fish doze) the feeders get the dip too now. then they go into a QT tank untill I get arround to moving them anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months it just depends on how I feel.

With SW fish I like to put them in a QT tank for several weeks unless it's a new tank then they just get the basic 1.2. and into the tank.

Quite honestly I am paranoid of any new addition I like to sit and shine a mag light at them for hours just to examine them for parasites flukes and other ickys, I dont even like to get the water from the origianal source in my tank. I would boil them if I could but I think that would be too stressfull on them in the end.

My QT tank is nothing more than another tank that is not set up in a traffic area, I try to make it look good, and I usually have someone swimming around in them just for asthetics but right now I do have 1 empty 30 in my basement and 1 empty 75 in the family room just incase I see a can't pass up newbie.

Re: Do you Quarantine?

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS..... I have to much time, money and effort in my tanks to take the chance otherwise. LFS often use copper in their systems but only enought to "hide" any symptoms and it only works for some of the issues a new fish can have.

Re: Do you Quarantine?

I agree with Phil. All large public aquariums do it and so should we.

Re: Do you Quarantine?

But we need to be sure the qt is cycled before adding a fish to qt. I had quite a problem when I first did qt 2 new fish. The tank had not cycled and the amonia became quite stressful to me and probably the fish.
