Coraline Algae - scarpe it off or leave it alone?

I am getting alot of purple algae growth on the back of my tank walls. I try to scrape it off because I think the black looks better on the back wall. It's tought to get though and Im getting tired of it.

Are there any benefits to leaving it alone and letting the back wall turn purple? Seems a lot of people do.

One benefit of letting it grow, less scraping. If you want more purple, scrape it. I let mine stay purple and got an urchin to eat it.

I scrape where I don't want it and let it grow in other places. An urchin should help keep it in check.

Re: Coraline Algae - scarpe it off or leave it alone?

i have a little tank that had a LARGE asterna population.

these lil blueish grey ones decimated my coraline.

so i stuck a needle in a stick and went to town

Scraping it off will make it grow super fast. Scraping it off and letting it reseed spreads it fast.
I personally scrape it off. It looks best on just the rocks IMO.

Re: Coraline Algae - scarpe it off or leave it alone?

Seems to be the case - Its a double edge sword - I am glad the algae has covered the rocks but I like to keep the background clean. Unfortunately, the more I scrape the more returns, and it stresses everything in the tank to constantly have my hand in there. All the corals shrink up and close - argh...
