so can anyone theorize why our skimmates smell differently depending on our skimmers?

Variables are wetness of skimate, bioload, water turn over rate, and volume/quality of skimmer.

The more bioload you have the more skimmate you will get. The wetter and tinier the bubbles, the more contact area there is to remove DOCs from the water column. The more intake/output from your skimmer the more skimate you will have. The greater the turn over rate in your tank, the longer the DOCs will be supended in the water column, thus able to be removed by skimming.

This is not an entirely exhaustive explanation, but covers most of the bases.

right, that all makes since, but how does that translate to stinkiness?

I have a pretty light bioload, so my skimmer doesn't pull out too much, but like I said, what it does pull out is rank.

The more crap to pull out= more stink.

When i was running my MRC skimmer, and i would empty the cup it smelled real horrid. I still havent decided what smells worse a babys dirty diaper, a dead snail, or my skim mate

my skimmates not even close to that smell... maybe its cuz i have ssuch a small tank with a low bioload.

very possible. At the time this was happening i was curing 100# pounds live rock also.

Depends on the skimmer BUT our Deltec MCE 600 pulls out gunk that when I clean it out I need to vent the laundry room out later with the window wide open for several hours! I cannot believe the putrid gunk this skimmer takes out of water that seem crystal clear. Smells like sulphur and all the fine smells of the sea.

This is why I will not have a tank without a skimmer. Can you imagine leaving that gunk in the water? The first time I emptied the cup I was forever sold on the usefulness of this piece of equipment.
