OT:Science Curriculum Change in FL

I thought this would spark a good discussion, especially among us, I'm sure there will be many many of us here on RS that would like to see this Changed, and I'm sure there will be many of those who will oppose. I for one love science, straight "A's" through school, and trust me, every little bit sank in.

Back to the Poll, Today (2/19/08) There will be a vote in our state capital(Tallahassee, FL) to change the teachings of evolution, NOT TO TAKE IT out of the Curriculum, but to change THEORY to FACT. I for one am very excited, I think they should change it. Then again that is my right as an american, freedom of religion, and includes our right to popular vote. How do YOU feel? Should it be changed? Do you believe in the BIG BANG THEORY/FACT and Natural Evolution.

PS-i feel this has to do with our hobby as well, as we plainly see everyday, evolution on a smaller level, animals evolve to the confines of our Aquariums.

Evolution is irrefutable, proof is all around us! What hasn't been proven is blind faith.

I just think it is a sad commentary on the public school system that knowledge is determined by politics and voting, not facts.

Re: OT:Science Curriculum Change in FL

I think they should do a better job of teaching what a theory means in science versus what a theory means in the common usage. Besides, even it were "just a theory", it is the single most supported theory in all of science. Evolution has mountains of evidence behind it, both literally and figuratively.

Re: OT:Science Curriculum Change in FL

to start, let me say that i am a strong believer in intellegent design. this includes MICRO evolution, not MACRO evolution.

that being said, "theory" is the single most missunderstood word in science. a theory is not an educated guess, but a tried and tested explanation that has been accepted by the scientific community. so distinguishing between scientific theory and fact is kind of a silly thing.

however, to claim that evolution is somehow a more "scientific" explanation than intelligent design is ridiculous. both are working with the same evidence and neither can be completely proven. both require faith in something that we can not test. they are both completely biased, just based on two opposite standpoints. when evolutionists interpret evidence, they try to see how it would explain how all life came from no life and progressed over billions of years. when creationists/intelligent design proponents interpret evidence, they do so with the belief that all life was created by an intelligent designer (if the idea of God scares you, think of it as aliens or time travelers!) and then the different kinds evolved and adapted to different enviornments to form the biodiversity we enjoy now.

Thanks for sharing the voting information Tippmann but this is a topic that has deep roots on both sides and has already caused name calling... It will only get worse

This thread serves no purpose other than to srike debating of the differences of beliefs and opinions.
