Two tanks

Suppose that in a dream world, you end up with two tanks, one is a 480g, the other a 300g. You want to make one a predator tank, the other a reef. Which would you make which?

i voted the 480 predator, it should have plenty of room for some nice big specimens, and a 300 gallon reef SHOULD BE PLENTY TO TAKE CARE OF...you know?

I'm with Daniel. 480 is a lot of room for some neat fish.

... why you got some big tanks you're not telling us about??

I'm with everybody else. 200 is plenty for a fabulous reef. Keep the bigger tank for the large/agressive fish.

I voted 480g - Predator, 300g - Reef but am having second thoughts now.
I would probably go all reef on both one sps, the other lps/softy. You can keep a lot of predators in a reef remember.

Agreed with everyone else I voted 480 for the predator for the maximum room. That would be sweet and I have a custom made glass 180 that I've been thinking about doing a "smaller" pred. tank. I'm not going to do a reef with it bc its not the prettiest tank in the world... already been making a "dream" list though... lion fish, clown trigger... ect. lol

I'm thinking of 200 Small predator reef, 155 reef here. Trouble is finding the right predators that will stay small enough. Maybe the 200 could be a mini predator reef.

I just got back from looking at the 480g. It's actually a 450g.

It's 120x24x36. It has 12 holes drilled in it for all sorts of plumbing possibilities, and a closed loop will definitely be part of the plumbing process.

Oh yeah, I did buy this one for $500 and the guy is delivering it tomorrow. One down, one to go.

I really appreciate everyones votes and comments. I'm still so torn! I really love tangs and they would LOVE having that much swimming room. Where as my predators would LOVE having that much vertical space. But for a reef, would even 400w MH's be strong enough at the bottom of 3 feet of water? I'm guessing yes, but I don't know.

On a side note, TEN FEET is HUGE!!!

That is awesome, Congrats!!! Whatever you do you cant go wrong! Cant wait to see pics and you cant beat them delivering.

If you do go reef I think 400's would work but starting to push the limits at 36". I would def use lumeneric reflectors if you go the reef route

By the way I have a blueline 2x400 watt ballast for sale if you go with the reef. Let me know if your interested.

After relooking at the area, and the desire to have a closed loop system on the reef, and knowing that the other big tank is going to be viewable from three sides, and knowing that the big tank is already drilled full of holes, I guess I'm kind of left optionless as far as which one will be the reef.

The positive though to having a 10 ft long reef tank, I can finally get an Achilles Tang. I love those fish. And I would imagine that tangs will be very happy in a tank like that.

Now I need to find a tank that is at least 96" long for the killers. Or do you think that 84" would be adaquate for the predators we currently have?
