Anglers, Sharks, Rays, Jacks, Snapper, Grouper, Eels, and other large fish

How many people here have wanted badly to keep one or more of these type of fish? Which ones?

I plan to set up a species only tank with an angler/frogfish of some sort. It is probably a couple years out, though. I was not thinking of one that is really large, though, so perhaps not exactly what you are asking.

I would LOVE a grouper. But I think they should be left in the ocean. I saw one the other day with his fin holding onto a rock, the way it was stretched out it looked just like an arm stretched out and a hand resting on the rock, absolutely hysterical. He was watching all the customers looking at him.

Re: Anglers, Sharks, Rays, Jacks, Snapper, Grouper, Eels, and other large fish

When we go fishing I love to catch grouper. They taste great. But they really do have so much personality. I would love to have a huge Gag Grouper. I had a freind in Key West that had a Giant 4 foot Goliath Grouper for a pet. But It lived under his diock. He could actually swim with it. SWEET!!!
I think that the little groupers are ok in big tanks, but all the rother shoul be free.

when my wife and i finally buy a house, she's agreed to let me build a plywood megatank. somewhere well over the 500g range. im starting to pay alot more attention to the big tank threads to get ideas. its not going to be for many years but it will happen eventually. i would love to have a couple of the smaller sharks and an eel.

I have had all of them & enjoy every minute of them, Sharks Eels & Rays are very fun to deal with. Anglers are a riot to watch, Groupers are like pigs they just eat everything. Other fish including large tangs, puffer, triggers etc can become very danderous. JMO

I am planning on doing a predator tank so I will be getting a snowflake eel. I also love the way the anglers look, they are so funny! I think it would be fun to have one of those, they arent very big though (certain species).

Re: Anglers, Sharks, Rays, Jacks, Snapper, Grouper, Eels, and other large fish

I have a predator tank with a snowflake, a clown trigger, a picasso (huma huma) trigger, a porcupine puffer, and a hitchhiker ghost. My son and I are in the process of getting a 280g for them as a temporary size improvement until we can get the 465g for them. The big tank will be in a few years though and I'm afraid these guys will need a bigger tank long before then so the 280g will have to do for a while.

We also recently purchased a Miniatus Grouper. He has quickly become my favorite fish. His mannerisms really remind me of Scotts Spotty. He'll swim to the edge of a hole in the rocks and peer out at me. His body seems to be on hinges. His backside won't move but he turns his head to look around. He seems to be one of the friendliest fish you'd ever want to meet.

ALL of these fish ARE aggressive AND they eat like pigs (literally). WC's MUST be done often and lots of water each time. I do believe that everyone who responded has, without a doubt, the dedication and love for this hobby required to give these big fish a nice, happy, healthy home so I vote for "GO FOR IT!".

Re: Anglers, Sharks, Rays, Jacks, Snapper, Grouper, Eels, and other large fish

Once I finish my Navy life I will build a nice tank some where over 1000 gallons so that I can have a small shark and maybe a ray. But that is the future now I will have to be content with the 300 I am about to order. And none of those fish with thrive in such a dinky abode.
