i have never seen them in action but only hear good things. really i have not heard much else about them other than they are good. as i would expect coming from tunze. is there any little qurks about it. like collection cup leaking or too small or its noisy or whatever??
No the collection cup is big and every time you remove the collection cup to empty it you are also cleaning the cylinder that the foam goes up into the collection cup as they are one piece. It is very quiet. I can not hear it at all. I do run mine in the sump in about 10 inches of water Separate controls for air intake and water intake. I have had no leaking problems.
Tunze has stellar customer service too
When I first was setting up I was having some problems (100% User error) getting the skimmer to work. I contacted Roger Vitko of Tunze USA (on the Tunze thread at Shhhhhhhhhh- RC). He promptly replied and told me what I had done wrong. Then just this week I have 2 Tunze nanostream 6045 and their clamps are breaking after a few months in SW. Tunze has just recently come out with a new and stronger designed clamp and He is sending them to me at no charge.

I will say if you go with Tunze - Order before the first of the year.
Due to the weakening dollar verse the Euro - Tunze is raising prices effective January 1.

Last spring when I was researching skimmers the octopus was my second choice.

Re: another skimmer poll, which one?

A bit off topic here but how do we know if our skimmer is doing what it is spose to? What I mean is, I have an ASM 4X and I think it is working well, no nitrites or trates and all that, but is it maybe missing something? I get half full collection cup every two three days. Should there be more?

So my question here is what is the measure of a good skimmer. I know we all add different kinds/quantities of dirt to our tanks so how do we know if we get it all out?

Re: another skimmer poll, which one?

IMO the water tests tell you. If your levels are good then it is working well. You can somewhat tell by the amount of skimmate but that is more an indication of how you are feeding or if the tank is overloaded. Both will cause more skimmate. I really just depend on my tests.

Re: another skimmer poll, which one?

I don't think the Tunze skimmers are real good unless the new generation skimmers have improved in design. Most of the reefers on our partner site reefforum prefer H&S, Deltec, Bubblemaster over the Tunze any day. Also I have yet to see the effluent that the Octopus recirculating skimmers remove but have heard good things from them so if anyone has any photos please do post !

adjusting for wet or dry skimming effects the amount skimmate. like lynn said testing will determine if you need adjustments. its all about contact time, air and water mix. it should have a water turn over rate of about 2x tank volume and 2x air intake here is a link for ya. Skimmers II

dude that thing looks scary. it would take a week to clean it.

witful, so are changing your name to ELOS or did you change it from ELOS???

humm, i really wanted the bubble master but my tank is right in the mid of the two sizes. the G4x seems to be the popular one. ok biggy question here. reefgeek has the ASM's on sale. the G4x is going for $370.00. should i just buy the G4x now or try out the G3 first and possibly pay $100-$150 more later for the same skimmer??
