I voted Tap water but we live in the country and have well water that runs through a filtration system.

Thanks to everyone who voted and responded, it looks like The Filter Guys may be the popular way to go.

No kidding, I spend about $9 a week on RO from a vending machine that I've got to haul around in the back of my truck in a 30 gal tub for water changes and top-off between my two tanks. $9 a week is a lot of quarters, I could have bought an RO/DI already for all I've put in that machine; not to mention ga$ money to the machine and back. This has got to stop!

Stop the insanity!!

I saw an add for a newer type of filtration system last night in one of my magazines. I cut the ad out and left it at home. I'll post it later today to get some feed back on it.

DI is simply short for deionization. It's another level/form of filtering. I couldn't tell you any specifics because I'm not sure I understand the process well enough. Perhaps someone else can add to the explanation. I don't even own one yet.

Specifically Deinoization is :

The last part is very important and why many people also use UV sterilizers and supplementary devices to increase the purity of our waters. I think the best option is your buying bottled water or a filtration unit (the most bang for your buck) is a complete RO/DI unit. This takes care of the majority of impurities that will be in your municiple water systems and also well/ground water. Lots of people think that "natural/well" water is the most perfect thing to use for your aquarium when in reality many times ground water is loaded with minerals and possibly chemicals. I feel that ALL water being used for your aquarium needs to be filtered.

Re: Buying the Best RO/DI (help put all the info in 1 place)

At IMAC last week AQUA.FX happen to be one of the Vendors next to Sharkys Reef and I picked up a 5 stage RO/DI 100 gpd for $180, they also sold and installed a TDS meter (IN and OUT) reading for $20.00. A great system for 200.00.
Reading in is 200+ out is 0 )

Re: Buying the Best RO/DI (help put all the info in 1 place)

I have my TDS meter (in and out) installed so that it reads when it goes into the DI chamber and when it goes out of the DI chamber. As suggested by the filter guys this way I will know when the RO filters need to be replaced as well as the DI.
Reading after RO = 2 to 8
After DI = 0

Yeow - that's 15 gpd. Either you have a very low capacity membrane (which are common in systems configured for drinking water), or you have a problem with your system.

I'm happy to help you troubleshoot it if you'd like.

I called them directly to order as I had a few questions which they were great at helping me understand what was going on.
It was really simple to install and when I had a unforeseen circumstance during installation, I called them and they helped me through it.
I now have RO/Di water for my tanks and RO for drinking.
The garden and plants get the waste water.

Total with some accessories and shipping $250.00.
Not haveing to lug a couple of 5g jugs from the LFS- priceless!
Hi Goldenmean (or anyone else who has this $ 199.00 - OCEAN REEF + 1 FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI from the Filter Guys), I see that you bought your RO/DI in May and posted that you're happy with it a week after you bought it. I'm leaning toward buying the same model and was wondering how you like the unit now that you've had it for a number of months. Any new feedback? Also, is the TDS meter worth the extra cash?
Thanks,
Justin

Re: Buying the Best RO/DI (help put all the info in 1 place)

I think the TDS meter is a MUST have no matter what unit you get. Without it you're merely guessing when the filters need changing and HOPING everything is working right. Its like having a car with no gas gauge. You know you are eventually going to run out of gas so you just put some in now and again to get by. Bad comparison but you get the idea.
