Question Quarantine Tank size?

What size is your QT and do you keep it cycled or only when needed?

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

I have a 20 gallon QT that I keep cycled, in my basement. It's really not that much trouble. It has already saved me when my heater blew. It's bare bottom with a HOB filter, no skimmer and a plastic decorative rock with holes for hiding. Also 2 pieces of PVC. I keep macro in it to feed to my fish, which can easily be removed if and when the tank is needed for medical emergencies.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

Well, since I have all my fish in QT and I'm making daily WC's, I think I'll keep mine cycled. Hadn't thought about using it for my veggies down the road - thanks for the tip Dentoid!

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

I have a 20g cycled and ready but I admit we were recently talking about taking it down. I may change my mind though. It just looks a bit silly to keep a tank with nothing in it. Maybe I just need to move it since right now it is between my kitchen and living room so we are frequently looking at my poor empty tank. It has a couple of pieces of LR, a hob filter, and one peppermint shrimp that has been in time out for a long time since I just haven't bothered putting him back after I thought he was nipping on my frogspawn. Wasn't him. He was falsely accused.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

I have a 10 gal bargain rack tank that I use for my QT. I lost some fish to ich (before I knew I should QT before putting new fish in), which inspired me to get it $10 tank, $8 hood, $7 for lightbulbs, and an old canister filter I had lying around, was all it took.
When the hypo treatment is done, I'll keep it cycled. Just in case.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

I've got an old 50gal plexi in my garage set up with LR, Caulerpa, an old canister, and some ancient HO lights. I keep it cycled and plan on throwing a cleaner shrimp in when I get around to it, he could prove to be useful in there.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

I had a 55 QT tank, but only had it up when I was adding new fish to the tank. I wasn't really worried about the fish getting new diseases once they had been in there for several months.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

Don't have one set up yet but the tank is sitting in my back house waiting to be set up. I bought a kit includes florescent light biowheel and bio bags in it. Can't wait to get it set up this weekend.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

i've used a 29 gal qt tank once for my powder blue, it was way too small by the way. after a week, i moved him to the main tank. the fish really didnt need a qt tank, it was that healthy!

i just make sure i buy healthy fish.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

I have a 10gQT. I change 1g/day in MT and add that to the QT to keep it cycled and up to "specs".

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

So your supposed to cycle your QT tank too? I thought you just set it up (heater, HOB filter and somewhere to hide) a few days before you went to get a fish? Then the temp would be stable and you just do regular water changes with main tank water to keep parameters safe????

Let me know, I am a total newb.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

If you do that you will need to do a whole lot of waterchanges. It cn be done though. When I set up a qt and tried to use it immediately I was doing 2 50% water changes a day and still could not keep the amonia down low enough to not endanger or at least stress the fish. That is why I have gone to keeping it up full time. You can keep a sponge or some bio-balls in your system so they can be used to move the good bacteria into the qt but it still takes either time or a whole lot of changes to keep things in line.

Re: Quarantine Tank size?

Ok. I suppose I could set up a 10g tank underneath my stand/cabinet. I was told that you cannot have LR or LS in a QT tank because when treating sick fish that either got sick in the main tank or new fish that came in are sick you have to give them medicine like copper or something and that will kill the LR and LS. Can a tank cycle without LR and LS?

This was what I was thinking for setup:

10-15g tank
HOB filter
lid/light
PVS pipe or other hiding
Heater
