Re: Janitorial Crab Opinions

I avoid crabs in my reef. I have just had too many problems with them eating snails etc that I am no longer willing to risk it. The right mix of snails and shrimp can do a great job keeping the tank clean without the added risk involved with the crabs.
I have heard good things about the scarlet hermits so if I were ever to change my mind those are the ones I would get.

Re: Janitorial Crab Opinions

I have a mixture of bluelegs and redlegs hermits. or I did anyway. while the hermits do a nice job working over my LR, they have greatly reduced their population along with my various species of snails. from the start I had offered them several hands full of different shells. the first snail population to drop were my narcissus for their shells untill only two veterans remain that became adapt at avoiding the hermits. then fallen astreas that couldn't turn over. only my trocheus seem fairly crab proof. then they went to work on any other hermit that was smaller or weaker. of the total of about fifteen or more various hermits I have purchased over time, there are only about a total of 6 hermits left.

Re: Janitorial Crab Opinions

See below for tank specs, I have Zebra hermits, Scarlet hermits, Blue leg hermits, sally light foot crabs and emerald crabs. Only ones I can say that have given me any greef are the Zebra Hermits, they have a tendancy to go after the nasuras snails for their shells.

Re: Janitorial Crab Opinions

I put 90 blue leg hermits in my 90 gallon and provided empty shells as well. To be truthful I can't tell how many are left nor can I count the number of snails I put in either. With all the LR and their constant moving it's hard to keep inventory with these buggars. But with 90 hermits and 60 astrea snails, I guess a balance will be obtained. I can always but new snails.

I like them. I think they are fun to watch. I don't have any coral yet though I might change my mind later though.

Re: Janitorial Crab Opinions

So far I haven't had any problems with my hermits. I don't have many, just six or so in the 12g. I think even if they did eat snails I'd be fine since my snail population is exploding. Plus most of the babies are so small and the adults are so big they wouldn't want their shells anyway.

I love emerald crabs! I had a small bubble algae problem that went away in a week thanks to one cute little green guy.

Sally light foots are evil. Mine killed the emerald and then died a few weeks later anyway. Bleh.
