I guess I have about 20 blue leg hermits in my 30g. When I introduced them about a month after I started the tank they did a pretty good job on my first few algae outbreaks- particularly with hair algae. I have noticed though if the algae is long they wont touch it. I keep a few shells in there for them, most are into astrea sized shells now (I got the shells empty- wernt killed for their house). There are better algae eaters out there but I dont regret putting them in.

I have 15 assorted hermits, 15-20 scarlet hermits, and 5 nassarius(at last count), 2 big turbos, 2 astrea, and about a million what look to be baby turbos. This is the second batch of baby turbos. I have about 5 turbos from the first batch about the size of a small marble. The new ones are smaller than a BB. This is all in a 20 gallon, I'm stocking up for my 75. I'll be using snails and scarlets in my 75. All other crabs are evil. I put in empty shells for the hermits but they keep killing off my nassarius for their shells and pleasure. They never keep the nassarius shells they just try them on and go back to their original home.

I'm very surprised by the results of this poll. I see there are many that have had issues with crabs in their tanks, yet still want to continue to use them as part of a clean up crew. Have you been programmed by the Crabs are Good Advertising Counsel?

Craig,
If its the one I'm thinking of we always called 'em demon hermits in Hawaii, and no I never had any problems w/ them. The are orange striped (horizontially), live in cone snail shells (they are flatter than most hermits). I have also sheard of them being called halloween hermits. I have only seen a few for sale here on the mainland. I would love to have some again. Can you get some pics of the herits that RC brought back?

We have about 10 blue leg hermits. The only real issues have been fights for each others shells. Even, with a supply of larger shells sitting right in front of them. I have not seen them attack any of the snails to get to their shells though. We do have empty shells laying around for them.

We also have 2 Sally Lightfoots. These guys to date have been model citizens! They never go after fish, snails or anything else. Just hang around the rocks gathering up food.

Our tank is a 46g.

My new tank is also going in the nude.

I plan to add 50+ assorted hermits. Have never had good luck with snails, They always die (turbos, redfoot , margrita, mexican astrea, bumble bee.... all died)

I think for the most part hermits are more beneficial than troublesome, however: I noticed that my pod population grew much faster in the new tank that didn't have hermits. I plan to add a few eventually, because I like the bio-diversity.
