Once upon a time, I thought all salts were equal. Then I learned to test and was very surprised at my findings...

To all: Test your salt prior to using it for PH, alk, ca, mg, Se... and possibly p04, silicates and nitrAtes if you're having algae issues. Never assume it is what it should be.

Hey guys, i hope i'm not opening a bucket here, i've been
using Marine Envirnment salt since pretty much the beginning of my
150gal start up. I've noticed that after the new salt water sets up
for 24 hours with pump and heater, there brown stuff on the top of
the water.
this does not happen with just r/o water, although, i have not put the
pump or heater in it.
i'm gonna do a test as i had to go out and get some I.O. because i'm out
of M.E. and need to do a water change. I'm gonna see if the I.O does the same thing.
I guess my question is does this situation happen to everybody with
their salt water sittin up for 24 hours, with heater and pump running??

When I was using Marinemix that did happen and I would remove whatever these impurities were before doing the water change.

oceanic salt ALL THE WAY!! used it for 9 months works fantastic tried IO and IO RC and coralife it was crap compared to OCEANIC.

Been using IO for 3 years and have never had that happen. Mixing some right now and it's already been 24 hours with nothing floating around on top.
