Re: Adding Ozone to a Reef?

I use ozone since my previous tank and I must say it's wonderful... clean water, messy skimmates... there are myths about the ozone killing you, but normally the ozone generators made for home aquarium use is never built to provide that dosage to knock you out, not to mention killing you...

If worried, get a decent Ozone generator like Sanders and it works tremendously well... I'm using a 200mg/hr Sanders and currently dosing between 75-100mg/hr 24/7, some would prefer to run it say 200mg/hr for few hours a day, normally when no one's at home ( to allay fears of ozone poisoning )

Have the ozone plugged into my skimmer to allow it to react with the water in the skimmer chamber and so far I've been getting good skimmates and the water is exceptionally clear!

Bill, you forgot the button for "ozone is: something else to eat up electricity and take up another plug" for the skeptical jerks like me!

Re: Adding Ozone to a Reef?

I use Ozone.
it is really much much simplier than you would think.
if you don't think of the complex reactions that are taking place.
Ozone is a unique gas that causes things to break down quickly.
it offers the wonderful benefit of crystal clear water. as in it removes any color found in the water. by breaking down the nutrients floating in the water.
it also oxygenates the water as a by-product
it does have its concerns as for if you add to much ozone it can cause illness or death but, you can add too much calcium or food, so whatever.
if you test for whatever you add it's no concern
as for the electricity it uses. its almost none.
there are some strong recomendations for using it in a certain type of skimmer becouse somethings are not ozone friendly and defintly in a sump,
as for the carbon or anything else that can always be debateable one way or another.

Re: Adding Ozone to a Reef?

I have always noted that tanks using ozone seem alot clearer..the water looks polished.
btw..after looking at that insanely large ozone generator in the baltimore aquarium...maybe squaregrouper can tell us more on ozone.

Re: Adding Ozone to a Reef?

No Woody it is not high enough.

I see this post is getting long, with many errors so here is everybodies homework. There will be a quizz tomorrow I must have missed it.

it also oxygenates the water as a by-product

That is a myth, it does about 0 to increase O2

neat idea with the skimmer and ozone

This how about 95 % of the people run ozone the other 5 % use Ozone Reactors (I have helped design some of them.)

I had allot of imput in these article

Ozone

Re: Adding Ozone to a Reef?

Ozone can be dangerous
effluent should be monitored for ORP increases
it does not reduce algae growth
it does clarify water
it may or may not increase o2.. if so only 0-1ppm.

..I think I'll stick with carbon for now
