Re: How many people have refugiums?

Hi Lynn,

If I was to add anything it would be a simple particle/media filter. I have the same list as you have and all my params are great. So I guess should quit stressing until I actual see a problem.

Re: How many people have refugiums?

2 weeks ago I added a HOB refuge onto my 10g tank and I have to say.. it's done MORE good than I had thought. The water is so clear that it's shocking! My FrogSpawn seems so much happier and fully now! I wish I had done this from day one but then I probably wouldn't appreciate it as much!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: How many people have refugiums?

Wow allen, congrats! Im putting in one, soon, but need to drill for overflow etc. I just got chaeto because my tank was in bad need of macro.. I am going to put in chambers for coral rubble and some stars in the chaeto just for fun. I have a ten and am going to put in a.. oh i havent decided. Some thing that will fit underneath. I have the main tank on a TV stand that has slits in the back, perfect for plumbing. Space underneath is where the fuge is gonna go, ill have pics later PROMISE. This thread helped me out a lot too, thanks!

Re: How many people have refugiums?

I thought I'd leave a little update!

Since adding the fuge EVERYTHING in the tank looks "Better". Even the rock "looks" more healthy! Maybe I am OVER stating it but even my wife mentions how much better everything is with the fuge. We've had snails start reproducing lately and last night noticed we have a new batch of starfish crawling on the back glass. I can't say 100% for sure the FUGE has improved the water that much and it's not just a coincidence but the tank is simply sparkling clean with it now. I think a FUGE should be Standard Equipment on any tank!!

Re: How many people have refugiums?

How do you use an HOB filter for a fuge? I have one that I am currently using, but want to try setting it up as a fuge in the future. Thanks!

Re: How many people have refugiums?

I think that the increase in surface area helped as well as the increase in the amount of water in the tank. I will tell you what though, i added that chaeto and all of a sudden theres tiny tiny eggs all over the windows, different kinds too. You would laugh if you saw the MaxiJet 1200 i put into my standard 10..lol I found a good peice of wood furniture for my 20 gallon with space underneath for a ten gal. fuge. Theres a shelf that just comes right out and drawer space underneath for supplies. Now my dresser doesnt have to house all my stuff!

As for the HOB filter as fuge, I have a feeling you just take off the top and if it is big enough put in some algae and coral rubble and you'll be good to go. Probably wrong though...lol

Re: How many people have refugiums?

I have read article after article on "modding" a HOB filter into a Fuge and can't find ANY right now... here's the "jist" of it

#1 change impeller to reduce flow (water needs to slow in the fuge to support more life in it)

#2 Partition it off so the macro algae doesn't enter the main display or get into the impeller assembly

#3 add Live Rock Rubble and Cheato

#4 Watch as your tank flourishes and gets better by the day

Re: How many people have refugiums?

I have a 20 gallon refuge for my 55 FOWLR tank. It's only been running for about two weeks now. I have some friends that's been supplying me with cheato, caulerpa and other forms of macro. I did put a rock that had some maiden's hair on it but the maiden's hair all died. Kind of strange; there are no herbivores in the fuge; not even pods. I admit I'm a bit stumped.

I voted No but I have acrylic on it's way to build one. 49g capacity for my 120g but probably run at around 30g.

Re: How many people have refugiums?

I have a 30 fuge w/-5" aragonite plenum and +-20# LR and Caulerpa. Pods galore! Fuges add water which adds stability to the whole system. Plus, the Caulerpa's pretty! and there's nobody in there to eat it all.
