HEY GUYS,
Ive been in the hobby for a few years now, including time helping my dad with his tank. I have only had my tank for about 6 months now so still new to the hobby as far as info goes.
I was wondering exactly what a refugium does and what its for?

I will have one once I get it up and running, I built it using an AGA 20 gallon High aquarium, some acryllic, eggcrate, silicone, and plastic weld.

Snelly, a refugium does a few things for you. First, the sand, rock, and critters there act as a filter to remove waste and detritus from the system. Chaeto (or other macroalgae) Also help to reduce phosphates and nutrients that might otherwise lead to algae growth in your tank. They provide an excellent habitat for copepods to breed and produce a food source for benthic fish and inverts such as blennies. And, the added water volume helps stabilize your system. Hope this helps.

I have one and am now second guessing myself on filtering. I am just starting out and have only rock in the tank. The only thing I am currently using is a Remora C skimmer and powerheads.

Once my cycling is complete, I plan on adding sand and chaeto to the refugium. Am I asking for trouble by not having a filtering system, along with the refugium, once I starting adding my livestock?

What does everyone else use with their refugium?

The only filtration I use is a protein skimmer, LR and my refugium. I occasionally run carbon or a filter sock but that is all.
What kind of filtration are you thinking of? It is entirely possible that you are fine with your current system. Let your tank parameters be your guide. If they are fine with your current filtration then you are fine.
