OT: Reefers vs. Trekkies

Just wondering what your opinion is. There may be some overlap, but do you think that reefers/marine aquarists react to marine hobby issues (lighting, water chemistry, etc.) in the same way that Star Trek fans react to phasers, warp speed issues, transport room issues, etc.?
I've never been to a marine hobby conference, but are there people with the same intensity/enthusiasm challenging discrepancies of the lecturers like when a Star Trek fan asks a character actor, "In episode #8438-C 'Mission to Jendell' scene twelve showed the photon torpedo exploding at 50 microns outside of the flex capacitor, when we know that in a previous episode photon torpedos only explode within 23.69 microns of a floating nebula. Can you explain that?" -The actor then squirms in his seat and wonders if the free plane ride and hotel was worth the aggravation.
Are we that geeky/emeshed into our hobby? I mean how many people do you know in your everyday life that go on salt water message boards and provide so much attention to...a tank? My girlfriend doesn't understand it, but at least she knows where I am everyday.
Not trying to start any trouble or offend anyone (especially trekkies).

Hey, Travis...can I add a poll to this post entitled, " Who would win in a fight: Reefers vs. Trekkies"...if you say "no, this is a peaceful site, no riots please, or stop wasting bandwidth", then I was just kidding...if you say "yes", then how do I go about doing it, or do I have to start a new thread?

Yes, you can post a poll anytime you want as long as it's in the right forum, and I'd say this one is perfect for OT.

Try clicking "edit thread" and see if there's an option to add the poll. If not, PM me or the mod of your choice with the answers you want to ask in the poll and we'll be happy to add it.

Yeah, we get just as excited about our reefs...we just don't dress like tanks/fish and attend conferences. At least not that I know of!

Thanx Travis!!! The option was in Thread Tools...just like you said.
I have a feeling I'll be the only one enthusiastic about this thread.
BTW, I think reefers would win b/c when the trekkies try to shoot us with their phasers and realize that nothing came out, we'd blast them with tons of water from our powerheads!

I would say reefers, just cuz they get obsessed with going bigger and better. You gotta be a big strong guy or have big strong friends to move a 500 gallon tank into your house.

Although my old boss was a trekkie, and he had a big klingon sword in his house, so that might even the odds. And it was a big evil looking sword, sharp also...

I liken it to the "jam band" scene, although reefers tend to bathe a bit more. As far as money spent, time spent, the jargoon, etc..., I find them to be very similar...

Take er easy

I agree.

I don't know why, but I keep laughing everytime I read this thread.

Travis: I agree. I think that Trekkies would try to transport themselves outta the fight, but then they'd realize that there really is no such thing. Geez, I can't stop laughing about this. Reminds me of that bit with that hand-puppet dog from the Conan O'brien Show asking silly questions to Star Wars fans. HEY!!! They could probably give a good fight to reefers...I mean with the force and all on their side.

im going to beat myself up,,,lol,,,,i love my trek,,,but never went to a convention,,,those even scare me! as far as devotion to what boatfloats us,,id say its a tie...but if it was a knock down drag out brawl,,reefers would win,,,we get up and work on tanks and lift them and scrub them and actually leave the house to go get stuff...trekkies...sitting infront of the tube endlessly scribbling notes...LOL

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Holy cow...

I bet they have some crazy forums. Trek Sanctuary

BTW, what in the world made you think up this poll RanRoc??? sounds like a question one of Scott's "reefer" friends would come up with while they were "reefin" with the jam band

I was watching Star Trek (a 3 hour mini-marathon) on the Sci-Fi Channel today when it dawned on me that people can really get into involved in a subject matter, whether fantasy or reality. Then it occurred to me that it would be very funny to see a kind of "celebrity death match" between a guy with a fish tank and a guy with a phaser that didn't really shoot anything (except in his mind).

LOL...I used to take mental notes. I love the original Star Trek (watch it whenever I can), and can sometimes get into The Next Generation stuff, but I've never been to a trek convention either. I think that it would be too funny for me.
