Married a long time

This week is my 35th wedding anniversary. That seems odd today and I get wierd looks from a lot of people since it is so rare today to be married for so long. I know a guy who was married three times, twice to the same girl. I mean, what the hell are you thinking? If you diden't get along the first time, why would you do it again.
Obviousely he isn't very good at this.
And if you notice when someone was married three or four times it is always the partner that is no good, never the person telling the story.
Some people are just no good at this.
I am though running out of things to get for my wife on these occasions and birthdays.
I took her out last night to what I feel is the best restaurant on Long Island, it is on the beach and has the best food and view in NY.
Next week I am taking her to Connecticut on a boatride to see the foliage and stay over at a B&B. I retired so I can't take her to the Caribbean every year anymore.
I am lucky to have married my best friend and we still hang out all the time together. Unfortunately she does not share my love of the hobby but she does enjoy diving with me and we have been diving since the seventees.
It is a shame that there are so many married people who fight all the time.
We fight of course but she goes to the gym almost every day so I let her win.

And of course what she looked like when I married her. She doesen't do the Farrah Fawcett hair any more.

Re: Married a long time

Woo hoo! Congratulations! My husband and I are only up to 14. I married my best friend as well and I wouldn't have it any other way. We very rarely get each other things for occasions. Spending the time together is worth a lot more. We have different hobbies that keep us each entertained...but it gives us more to talk about. We have 'fish' Sunday. We go to the local fish stores and look around for me and then we go to the surf shops and look around for him (the type of surfboard he likes are called fishes).
My grandparents just had their 62nd anniversary.

Re: Married a long time

Very nice indeed. I congratulate you on a job well done, I just celebrated 23 yrs married and 26 together. I love the looks on peoples faces when I say that. My fav. was going to school and both of us being there together, The kids teachers would ask silly stuff like is that your real mom? oh that must be the step dad, we both laugh about it still, because everyone assumes noone can be together that long anymore. It hasnt always been easy, but we wouldnt change it either! We love living by the Keys as it allows us to enjoy all our favorite things together plenty of Versitility!!

Re: Married a long time

Congratulations!! It's such a shame that so many people aren't able to stay together that long that you get weird looks.

Mike and I have been married 15 years next year and have been together for almost 20. Neither of us has hit 40 yet, so we really get weird looks when we mention the latter.

Re: Married a long time

We live in New Hyde Park, 2 miles from the city limits. We both grew up in Flushing Queens.
When we started dating I was on leave for 30 days going to Viet Nam. I was 19. She was about 15 and all my friends and hers told me she was 17 as she looked. I was in Nam for a year and every week or so she would mail me a care package of things like socks, candy, magazines, canned ham, cookies etc.
My packages used to come with a hole in them and all of the stuff not in cans was eaten by rats. Then she had to put everything in cans so it was heavy and very expensive. I am sure her Mother paid the postage.
She wrote me every couple of days and I knew I found a good one. When I got home I still diden't know she was so young. I would drive her home from high school and thought she is awfully old to be going to school. Of course I found out and we waited until she was 18 before we got married.
We diden't live or ever go away together, that was not done in those days.
I wanted to meet her when I was on R&R from Nam but that was not done either.
I am very glad for it because look at the beautiful girl I waited for.

Re: Married a long time

Congrats Paul!

I lived in Flushing for about a year on Kissena Blvd. then moved back to Manhattan. I am sure it was different when you were growing up.

Re: Married a long time

Scott I moved there from Brooklyn in 1952 when I was 3.
I lived there for almost 30 years. I went to PS 24 and my wife went to St. Annes.
Kissens blvd was narrower then. When they widened it, they took off about 10' of our front lawn which I thought was ours.
There was only one traffic light from the LIE to Main St

Re: Married a long time

What a wonderful story. I've go 14 yrs and counting.
Isn't the tank 38? Just came to mind that if I am remembering right you have had the tank longer than your wife.
Obviously when you do something you do it for keeps.
Beautiful pics.

Re: Married a long time

well.. i'm in a long distance relationship, I've met her once, have tickets to meet her again.. and I HOPE our relationship lasts as long or longer than that.. when I get married, I intend on it being a "for life" thing -- as the vows say

EMG I am sorry about that. I guess one of you will have to initiate something but I am by far not the person to give advice.

Intranick, good luck.
I enjoy picking out places and things to do for our anniversary. We don't really buy much for each other anymore, it is more fun to go somewhere together. We are not going to the Caribbean or anything drastic like that this year, we did a few costly vacations last year and need a year to recover, but I did book a getaway in Connecticut overnight. There is a fall foliage boat tour on the Conn. river and a nice town to hang around in for the night. It's small but I like to go every year or so. We are boaters and I worked in Manhattan all my life so I like to get to the woods occasionally. And so does she.
She doesen't know we are going yet and won't find out until we get there.
Once I drove to the airport with her and diden't tell her where we were going.
It was some Caribbean Island, I don't even remember which one but we like smaller places, no large crowds.
Like this place in Bora Bora on the beach.

Re: Married a long time

Now that I am retired I also want to do a few things that New Yorker's rarely do like visit the Statue of Liberty, I went there last in 2nd grade but I have seen it almost every day from shore. Ellis Island where our Grandparents first landed America 100 years ago and being a Veteran I am embarassed I never visited the Aircraft Carrier Intrepid even though I worked right next to it for a while.
This stuff is cheap and right near home so we may as well take advantage of it like the tourists do.
