| Reef Lobster | Hi everyone, For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the unknown. I have a massive, habitual need for knowledge, to the extent it has made me ill from staying awake days at a time, reading about whatever subject my mind has stumbled upon. Years ago, I stumbled across a web site called S.E.T.I. (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). I immediately signed on board to assist in their data translation service that happens on your computer. They give you some software to run on your computer and you crunch data packets for them. The Fed's are trying to cut their throat and kill funding to SETI. There are many reasons why the shouldn't. Only Arecibo’s planetary radar can image and determine exact trajectories of potentially threatening asteroids. This makes Arecibo the best tool for investigating Near Earth Objects and warning the world about possible asteroid threats. As the largest radio telescope in the world, the Arecibo Observatory is an important asset to America’s scientific and technological communities. No other radio telescope comes close to the sensitivity that the Arecibo telescope has and there won't be another one that could surpass Arecibo, till the year 2020. As most of us on this web site are searching for knowledge about our salt water hobby, the possibility of someone here, actually figuring out how to save the world's reef's is not as far fetched as you may think and the possibility this may happen is magnified by the massive participant growth the hobby has seen, just over the past 20 years. It would be great for our inner space here on earth if someone did find a cure for our worlds reef's and I believe it would be great if we found someone out there in outer space that could help us cure things like cancer, but we will never find them, unless we search. Please help by sending a computer generated letter to your congressman asking that they not pull the plug on this important research project. To send a letter to your congressman click here. SETI's home page: SETI@home Thanks for any support you give and thanks for reading and checking it out! |

| Madame Klanganator | Re: OT: SETI Needs your help!!!!! I've had four computers working on the SETI project since the late 90's! John, you sound like me... I get fixated on things and my mind can't let them go! I'm wondering why I haven't heard of this funding cut! Probably because I'm paying most of my attention to reefing... I will send off a letter to my congressman today for sure. My thoughts are the same as yours; inner space and outer space offer wealth's of information and that is exactly what our money should be spent on. I could get way political here but I'll resist the urge. Rock on SETI!
