OT: Keep Camaro, or get a Solstice?

Okay, so here's my dilemma;

I currently have a 2001 Camaro Z/28 that I've fully paid off, have the title in possesion and have done A LOT of work to, (currently a 11.70's car at the strip) dyno'd 393 rwhp / 368 rwtq which behind my stalled automatic equates to about 470 base horsepower.

my fear is this: over the next year, the new camaro will be released and my car will depreciate greatly. The car is not going to get any younger, and a rebuild on the trans and possibly a new differential are going to be in order if I keep the car ($4k - $5k) for both.

My thought is this, sell the car as is (or de-mod and sell) what I paid for the car, stock. which means I'll lose a few thousand on the mods (which is to be expected when tinkering with a car) and pick up a new Pontiac Solstice GXP. The GXP would let me have some fun (even though slower and not muscle-car-sounding) while waiting for the new z/28 camaro to be released in late 2009 / early 2010. The solstice will depreciate much slower over those two years than my 01 camaro. which I feel is goin to take a bath...

ANYWAY what do you guys think you would do? Get out of the Drag racing/wrench turning while i still can, or keep it and enjoy it, and just deal with things that come up?

Re: OT: Keep Camaro, or get a Solstice?

On a side note, does anyone have a solstice? do you like it? regret buying it or wish anything were different? the reason i'm so partial to the solstice is because my first car was an 88 gt fiero, and in a sense, the spirit of the fiero is living on in the solstice...

Re: OT: Keep Camaro, or get a Solstice?

As a bit of a car geek, I'll weigh in here.

The Solstice has gotten good reviews for fun factor, not built for speed - I'd consider it a nicer-looking miata.

HOWEVER... the Soltice and its twin, the Sky, have gotten absolutely terrible reliability ratings. The Solstice, I believe was the worst-rated for reliability of all new cars in consumer reports.

That will greatly affect resale value.

Also, I'm not sure that your camaro will depreciate faster than the Solstice at this point. Typically a 7-year old car will be at or near the bottom of the value curve. Check your local Craig's List and see what people are selling them for. A new car, however, will depreciate incredibly quickly.

I think the Solstice is a losing proposition. Maybe something a couple years old that has alrready taken the hit, since this will be an interim car either way?

Re: OT: Keep Camaro, or get a Solstice?

Not even a decision to be made here, keep the Camaro. It shouldn't depreciate in value much more than it has already. I would use it as a daily driver, and keep the new camaro in the garage. It might be hard to get what you think the modded chevy is worth anyhow. That Solstice is less than desirable in my opinion.

Re: OT: Keep Camaro, or get a Solstice?

With things headed the way they are now, 2010 might not bring us a camaro. At least not one with any power. I think this mini muscle car revival is coming to an end. I'm working 18 hr days thru the weekend, but maybe next weekend I can stop by and check out the camaro and tank.

Re: OT: Keep Camaro, or get a Solstice?

I dunno, I think the way we see cars is headed for a serious overhaul. Anything that gets less than 30 mpg is going to go by the wayside or be retrofitted with one of those new conversion kits they're coming out with.

I'd say keep the Camaro. It'll be a nostalgia piece for collectors even if no one uses it for regular driving in the future.

I would drop the one you have now and get the new one in a heart beat. That thing is sweet. Or the new challenger if you could.

No wonder you and Frank got along Traivis.
Personally I would much prefer to re-build an old muscle car for fun and have something with good gas mileage for daily driving.

Re: OT: Keep Camaro, or get a Solstice?

Travis I know. They had the best cars in the late 60s and 70s.
I would stay away from the Solstice. IMO Pontiac isn't what it used to be.
