Re: Who knows what about solar panels?

Stace, also look into whether your state offers rebates or incentives for adding solar. Some states have excellent incentives for going solar.
I'm not sure, but I believe in California any excess power is sold back to the power company for a decent price. Helps offset your power bills.
Great direction to head in!

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Re: Who knows what about solar panels?

Thanks Victor!! One of the links Al gave me goes over what incentives there are. Thankfully Michigan does offer some! Either way I would still do it, just nice to have a kick back

Yep, it would cost a minimum of $50K for us, and that wouldn't totally replace our electrical bill, just knock it down to about 20%.

Here, the utilities no longer pay you for your excess generation. It's considered a "donation to the system." THAT eliminates some of the incentive.

Re: Who knows what about solar panels?

Glad you asked, I just today got my building permit for me to install Solar Electric panels on my roof. I also received a letter from my utility company that they put aside $9,856 for my rebate. My New York tax credit is $1,190 and my federal tax credit is $1,428.
The cost of the system excluding some electrical connections is $14,615.
It will actually cost me $2,142.
My yearly savings in electricity (where I live according to the engineer) will be $611.00 a year. $29,160 savings over the life of the system which is warranted for 25 years.
I am installing it my self. The company gives me a custom made aluminum frame for my roof. I sent them pictures of the roof and they have the sattelite picture. The panels just snap into the frame. If you have a larger roof you will generate more power and have a larger savings. New York does not get great sun or the savings would be greater also. The good part is on the hottest days it should cover most of the air conditioning costs.

Good for you Paul!! I would love to go green, but in CA no incentives and way too much money.

Actually Steph, Kahleeforneeya has some pretty decent incentives and rebates. IIRC, MOST of the state gets $2.50/watt of generating capacity plus the federal tax credit. I don't think there's a state tax credit though.

Re: Who knows what about solar panels?

My solar panels arrived a few days ago. It will take me about 4 days to complete the system. They still owe me a couple of parts so I can't really get to far into it yet. I replaced my roof last week also, don't want to put those things on an old roof.
I also realized that I could fit 6 more panels up there so I ordered them to give me a total of 22 panels

your exactly right.

The OTHER thing to look at is wind power. ive seen small/"personal" wind generators for a few grand and wonder if you could mount them to your roof somehow ... even if it had to go up another 40 feet
