| Plate Coral | This is just amazing. I come home from my first day back at school (we had March Break up here in Canada last week - a one week break away from school) and I automatically come up to check on my fish. First thing I see is that my marble angel is staying in the one spot in the tank, not moving anywhere, even for food (she usually just goes crazy for food), anyways, I feed the other fish in the tank (Spotted PIM Catfish, and another angel) and go downstairs to eat something and start my homework (that part about starting my homework was a lie ). A couple of hours later when I have to come upstairs and REALLY start my homework, I notice that there are a lot of little dots on the leaves of the plants in my tank. I pull my tank away from the wall and the WHOLE PLANT is covered in little dots. I call over to Super Pet, and they said that they're more than likely EGGS! So I'm going to have around 300 fry in my 10-gallon tank. Well tomorrow I'm off to the LFS to get a tank, filter and heater to put my catfish in for the moment (as it will eat the fry). The thing that surprised me the most is that Freshwater Angels don't eat their eggs! They actually protect them! Would anyone happen to have any advice for keeping the fry alive, or any other suggestions/comments? lol I'm sorry for writing a book here, but this is the most interesting thing that has happend to me in this fish-keeping hobby since I got my tank! lol I'm also sorry for posting a Freshwater thread in the Reef Forums, but everyone here seems like a family, so I just decided to add this in. I will try to take some pictures tonight and post them tomorrow. Goodnight,

| Yoda Poohbah~ ![]() | fresh water angels are a cichlid, therefore they actively care for the eggs and fry. the fry will hatch and feed off of there yoke sac for several days. then they will eat finely finely ground fish food or you can purchase a paste food for them. be carefull of filters. they are not strong swimmers and will get sucked up. my best recconmendation would be a air driven foam filter. ( ive been out of the ratail business for awhile but Tetra used to make a "Luft Filter") water quality is paramount for the babies, so flush and clean the foam daily and syphon out any debris. after about a week or so,the fry will be larger and the parents will become less interested in the fry, and can possibly eat them. dont be surprised if in theis time you lose half the brood, not all fry survive. the parents may at any time eat the young, but after each successive brooding, they become better and better parents. run the tank barebottom for cleanliness reasons, astectics are not a concern here. good luck and have fun.

I think you're gonna like it, I think you're gonna feel you belong. A walk to vacation, A necessary sedation, You wanna feel at home cause' you belong. i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

I would recommend removing the eggs, without letting them get out of water, and putting them in a 10g tank of their own. I would use an air line and stone under the eggs to keep the water circulating across them and oxygenated. Add methylene blue to the tank till you cannot see your hand on the other side, this will prevent any dead eggs from fungusing and taking all the other eggs with it. Keep the tank at 80-82* and they should hatch in a few days, once they hatch, do small 1/2-1 gallon water changes (matching temp and ph) daily. I agree with using a sponge filter.

| Reef Lobster | Ummm, cichlids .... good or bad parents. Well I kept them until two weeks ago for 8 years and all i can say is they are superb parents until the fry are about 1-2 weeks old and then they will either abandom them to the other fish or eat them themselves .... upto this point, they are excellent parents Brucey

| Plate Coral | Thanks for all of your help. I will let you know how many do survive. I am going to go out and get another 10-gallon tank (only $19.99 Canadian) and put my catfish in. After around another week of two, I'll put the angelfish in with it, so that the fry wont get eaten. Once again, thanks a ton!! I am on my way upstairs to try and get a few pics of the eggs and I'm going to try and post a pic of the mom and dad in a minute. EDIT : Here's the picture of the angels... Hope this works as this is the first time I've posted a picture...

| Contributing Member ![]() | Great advice here. All my angels ate the fist few clutches of eggs they laid. After awhile they learn and become great parents. Congrats and nice shot ![]()

| Plate Coral | Bad day today! I came home from school, and found my male angel dead as well as my catfish! What a sad day! It's probably just a matter of time before the other angel dies. Just thought I'd update you all... And if this doesnt work, I might turn my 10-gallon into a nano! lol, always on the optomistic side...
