Earthquakes happen when they happen. I would hate living my life in a state of fear with no way to predict when or how.

No state of fear here Lynn. No one really thinks about them until they happen. Sure, we're all aware that there COULD be the "BIG ONE" any day, but pfft...don't sweat it. It's like worrying whether the Russian Space Station will come crashing down on our heads...it MIGHT happen, but you can't control it, so why worry?
Besides, MOST earthquakes here don't cause any damage other than a few broken bottles in the grocery store or cups from a kitchen cupboard. It's the truly spectacular ones that gets everyone's attention, (like the monster-quake that just happened in China) that make people leery, and they're rare.
