| Plate Coral | OT: motorcyles Since I have the caulerpa whipping warning on my banner, ![]() thought I'd post some random thoughts... I recently came the realization that I'm spending about $250/month in gas just to drive to work and back in my F150! I need the truck for my horses, so trading it in isn't an option (not that there is any trade in value on trucks right now anyway), so I've decided to go the motorcycle route for my daily commute. ![]() To all you reefers who ride, what're some of your favorite bikes? I've never ridden before, but am looking at Craigslist trying to find something I like the looks of. So far I've found three in my price range that I like: Honda Nighthawk, Honda Rebel, and Kawasaki zephyr. I found a lot of Harley's I like, but not in the < $2500 range. What do you all suggest for a good starter bike? Pics are not only welcome, but highly encouraged! ![]()

| Elegance coral | Re: OT: motorcyles IIRC the Rebel was a 250. Not a lot of power, but would get you from point A to B. Starter bikes... I started on a 500 Shadow. Not the biggest of bikes either, but has a little more kick than the 250. The last bike I owned was a 1500 Intruder. ![]()

| Elegance coral | Re: OT: motorcyles Since you'd be learning, make sure to get something with not too much power like a 250. It'll get you from point A to point B like Scott said but it's not too much power for it to get squirley. Also, don't go for looks so much. You'll probably lay it over while you're learning and you don't want to wreck something you really like. Once you learn and get really comfortable, you can get something bigger. I personally like GXSR-600's, but that's just my taste. |

| Just some guy, you know? | Re: OT: motorcyles I ride as well,.. I picked up a 1984 Honda Shadow at a junkyard about 5 years ago for $775 and I've put 40,000 miles on it since. It's a blast to ride, plus I can pull off 55 MPG in traffic and in the city. Whiskey

| Just some guy, you know? | Re: OT: motorcyles I love it but at almost 70,000 miles, especially the way I ride it (Yeah,.. It'll hold 120) I'm about to loose the motor It burns oil now when I really get on it. Motorcycle parts are expensive enough that it's not worth it for me to rebuild the engine. It only gets about 40 MPG at 120 BTW. Whiskey

| Limpet | Re: OT: motorcyles 42mpg riding it HARD. It's not all that fast, 10.7@124mph stock. It's my DD, since my Trans Am only gets 14mpg. ![]() My brother owned a rebel. Before the shop screwed up his clutch he was getting, no joke, 80mpg. After they messed it up he got only 60mpg.

| Achilles Tang | Re: OT: motorcyles You might try looking at a Seca II. It's older so you can probably find one cheap. It sits upright so it would be cozy for commuting. It's not a ball of fire but you want something that will get out of it's own way. Best place to start is to go sit on a bunch of different types and find out what is comfortable to you. I have no idea of your size to make better recommendations.

| Elegance coral | Re: OT: motorcyles 2500 will get you a nice shadow VLX 600cc. That was my first bike and I loved it. bought it for $2900, sold it a year later for $2750. the rabel is just two small, I see people riding them and the just look funny on a tiny bike. I hightly suggest taking the safety course. they teach you little secrets that you would otherwise learn the hard way and you get your endorsement at the end of the class which is sweet. heres is the sweetest toy I've ever owned |

| Tunicate | Re: OT: motorcyles I just got my grubby little paws on a vintage 74 Suzuki GT250 twin 2 stroke. What a cherry little bike. Only 890 miles. Haven't got any pictures yet cuz it's still apart getting cleaned and polished. What a steal for a 34 year old bike. I only need to replace the left side cover and seat. |
