but you'd run into all kinds of software problems if you switched over to them for Corp. stuff.
This is widely believed but it is just not true.
The belief that apple is for creative/artistic uses and PC is for business is BUNK! Business can make a seemless switch over to MAC.
You do not even have to buy "Office for Mac" software as there is wonderful freeware that does the same thing.

I agree Carl! But I have talked with some others in my field who have made the switch and once you get over the "Learning Curve" it seems to be miles ahead of where we are now. Something I'm "researching" heavily.

This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Not as seemless as you might think... In my field as of now the major players are Autocad, Solidworks, and Catia. None of these will natively run on a Mac. This alone would shut done most engineering firms, not to mention the DoD.

There are ways of getting around some of these walls but they require numerous open source programs which are free but cause problems. not to mention compatability between differnt open source programs and users. they require to much run around in order to get specifics done.

In "My" field our only current hurdle is one Cabinet Design program, one Window Design program and our Point Of Sale program. Down to three!!

Learning curve is nothing... picking up a mac and getting familiar with it is easy as pie for most... the issues id be concerned about is the software being used by companys most likly isnt compatible... in order for a switch this massive to take place, EVERYONE would have to switch over at the same time. Programmers, office employees, schools. EVERYTHING. And then thered be so much focus on a mac that the problems of the PC would begin to show theyre ugly faces. Viruses, loop holes, back doors. I have a feeling that Macs are WAY more suseptable to these things than PC... there just isnt enough hacking done on them to Show this.

To some degree the MAC would get a "Real Test by Fire" yes!! To some degree.

To some extent you're correct. Yes the "Exploiters" use a "Most bang for the buck approach" in that they write the nasty code for what gives the most results with the least effort. Yes Windows is more widely used so it's more widely "attacked". Same holds true with IE vs FireFox. For a LONG time FireFox was all but bullet proof because the programmers weren't even trying to hack it. Now that FireFox is so popular it's getting it's fair share of attacks.

On the flip side.. the MAC OS is is significantly different and due to it's nature it doesn't execute code in even a similar way to a PC. That in itself makes it much more robust. It's not "Virus Proof" (contrary to what many believe) but it's much stronger than any version of Uncle Bill's stuff.

On the flipped flip side, would'nt this reinforce my point of there not being enough software compatability to support the corp. world? i mean thats all a virus is right? code....

sure the two execute code completely differently but hey, once people figure out that you have to turn the mac jar lid in the opposite direction as the PC jar lid, stuffs gonna get in/out. And with more people learning the programing ways of the mac, the chances of os specific virus coding being executed.

Re: OT: Let's SAVE Windows XP

I just finished reformatting my brand new quad core. It came with Vista and I reformatted with Vista. Boy have I learned a lot. I got the networking to work finally. It didn't work when I got it and wouldn't connect to the internet without resetting the router every time. I also fixed a bunch of stuff and got it to speed up. It took literally 8 minutes to restart when I got it. I got all of the software off that came with it and started fresh. The biggest problem is with codec and drivers now. I've been going through the event manager and solving each error one by one. I've got it down to 0 and things are running smoothly...for now. I use the compatibility function to get some of the software to work. It has been a nightmare but I feel I'm getting to a working point just now. I've had the computer since Feb.
If the software I have now would all work on a Mac I'd be on it in a second.

Oh man! You went through all that and BACK to Vista? You were in the "Home Stretch" and you ran back to the starting gate and buried your head in the food trough

Just playing with ya but .....

Re: OT: Let's SAVE Windows XP

I don't want to spend any more money buying another operating system.
I'm hell bent on making it work.
My 4" laptop saves the day often though...with XP.

I can appreciate that. No sense in giving Uncle Bill any MORE money if you don't have to

Re: OT: Let's SAVE Windows XP

I ahve vista and xp on two different hard drives in my pc so I can dual boot between them depending on what I want to do. If I game I need to use XP and if just surfing the net vista is fine but all in all it is not anywhere near what is was cracked up to be. I live and breath pc's I build them from scratch and mess with all kinds of software from photoshop to ftp programs and Vista gives me alot of headaches with a bunch of programs so once again Mr. BILL GATES CAN KISS MY WHITE... No more money from me Xp is where I am staying or I will switch over to Linux again.
