| Elegance coral | OT: Shark Attack This is so sad. I'm watching the news and there was a shark attack in Solana Beach. It was a group of triathalon swimmers that goes out every Friday. The man died. He had a 22" bite. They are up looking for the shark in a helicopter. They think it's a mako or a white.

| www.kids-with-cameras.org ![]() | Re: OT: Shark Attack Think about it. 22". That is from my hip bone to my shoulder. I am 6' tall. I could not imagine the pain of trying to recover from that. If possible at all. Add in the pressure of a Great White's bit, the pain would be just to much to bear.

| Achilles Tang | Re: OT: Shark Attack Very tragic for person and marine life. Too many ignorant people going out to get revenge - like we own both land and sea... I certainly have sympathy for the person, but I can't help but be amazed that this doesn't happen more often with how humans have invaded the oceans and depleted their food. The good thing is that they have a marine biologist involved already. (I'm not sure if 'good thing' is accurate) but for the shark's sake it's good. There has not been a fatal shark attack in that area for several decades. San Diego is pretty progressive when it comes to environment and ecology so I hope the marine life will be safe. Update on the news - marine biologist is fairly certain it was a great white attack.

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: OT: Shark Attack Shark Attack: Man Attacked, Killed by Shark is Identified - FOX6 San Diego Experts Say Swimmer was Likely Attacked by 12 to 17 Foot Great White Contributor: Anna Green Last Update: 12:19 pm Medics have responded to a fatal shark attack in Solana Beach. Authorities say that the 60-year-old man was swimming with a triathlon group before he was attacked. A Witness reported seeing a shark from the shore and another witness reported seeing the victim's leg being severed from the knee. A fellow swimmer that was nearby at the time of the attack said, "We heard yelling,we swam back , he was floating on his back and the four of us pulled him in." The shark that attacked and killed the swimmer Friday morning was likely an adult Great White shark, according to Richard Rosenblatt of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Rosenblatt, who examined the victim's body, estimates that the shark was between 12 and 17 feet long. Solana Beach lifeguard Capt. Craig Miller said, "This is something that is unheard of, especially in this area," Miller said. According the Florida Museum of Natural History's Shark file, the last known shark attack in San Diego County was in 1959. Certain stretches off the coast near Carlsbad, Oceanside, Encinitas, Del Mar and all the way out to Imperial Beach have been closed and may remain closed for 72 hours. The family of the victim has been notified about the attack and they are talking to firefighters and lifeguards." I've seen a couple of big tigers off the San Diego coast over the years, as well as off the Hawaiian Islands...and yes, a big one could have a bite radius that large...easily.

| Golden Moray | Re: OT: Shark Attack Oh my gosh, my heart skipped a beat! My girls and I were there recently hanging out. A couple friends of mine who live in the surrounding area train for triathlons off Solana beach and off of Del Mar. Very tragic.

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: OT: Shark Attack I was chatting with a guy at Yosemite yesterday while I was trying to see the pair who were climbing El Capitan. He lives in the San Diego area, and was in the ocean 1/4 mile from where the shark attack happened...and 40 minutes after...He said when the lifeguards warned him about the shark and that he should get out of the water, he left so fast his toes didn't even touch the water!
