Diane, this got so screwed up, so here is what happened.... Next time, we should wait at least 24 hrs for the questioner not to respond... Nick only waited about 3 hours and posted another question during an already playing question...

Though I think diane already covered this, and this is how ive always heard it:

a sound is only changes in air pressure until they are picked up by a transducer -- such as your ear or a microphone

Exactly victor, our ears are the receiver. I wasnt speaking about equipment as such. Sounds are transmitted or produced in this case; The transmitter (tree falling hitting things, the sounds being heard by a receiver - ears or fact similar. If no receiver = no sound.
