Re: OT: How's the weather?

Several things are going on, all in the lumbar area; three partially herniated disks, facet joint arthritis, a mis-aligned vertebra, and stenosis. All of this is causing nerve compression that causes pain down my legs and numbness in my feet. And back pain. I had a series of three epidurals in December that helped a LOT, then facet joint injections that helped a lot. Then I went to Europe in February and everything went to hell in a hand basket after that! The walking I did there did me in and I havent' been the same since.

Still sunny and warming.

Ten years ago, I lost 17 lbs of fat, put on 20 lbs of muscle, and do 4 - 5 days/wk of wicked core training. Back problems vanished with no meds and no surgery in about 10 weeks.

I would love that, Craig. I want to avoid surgery at all costs. My doc has suggested core training, but when the pain is this bad how do I accomplish it? Are there things I can do to improve core strength even when I'm in a lot of pain? If you have information I'd LOVE to have it.

There you have it, Barb. Just drop 17 pounds and go for that California beefcake look.

Barb - Here's a book that came highly recommended, Amazon.com: The Miracle Ball Method: Relieve Your Pain, Reshape Your Body, Reduce Your Stress [2 Miracle Balls Included]: Elaine Petrone: Books Also, find a reputable yoga studio or pilates studio or instructor. They can develop a no impact routine that will help strengthen your core, once your core muscles are improved everything else seems easier. I have only second hand experience, but watched the difference in my other half when he started this type of treatment. He still has some pain - the "injury" is still there - but his quality of life has greatly improved.

Thanks, Steph. Ha, I wonder if there's such a thing in Cleveland as a "reputable yoga studio or pilates studio or instructor". Pilates is what my pain guy recommended... very gentle to begin of course. I'll ask at the office when I'm there tomorrow if they have any recommendations. I have to start on something; this is completely unacceptable at my age.

Re: OT: How's the weather?

My dad has horrible back pain three herniated disks...bone chips...arthrits...and that's just what he tells us..I"ve been begging him to get surgerory but to be honest back problems run in my family and one of my relatives had a steal rod put in place many years ago.he's just afraid something will go wrong...I try to tell him that back procedures have come a long way...I actually have a collapesd C7 veterbrae (aroudn the neck area) and I'm conviced its what gives me headaches...as soon as I"m eligible for VA medical care I'm going in for surgery..and craig training is nice and all but when your back is screaming or yoru throwing up from somuch pain it's hard to get to the gym. Believe me I know about losing weight (studied to get my trainers license) but for some people its harder than others.

Re: OT: How's the weather?

I have a no gym starter system that will not place any pressure on the back. You can do it sitting, lying, or standing. (I'm as licensed personal trainer too.)

Re: OT: How's the weather?

I'm slowing down for the day. I got a little bit done, but I have a ton more to get through before I can leave town on Friday.

Still feeling a little under the weather and will probably go to bed as soon as possible tonight. In the meantime, I think I have earned my beer for the day.

The temp is great outside but the sand is blowing everywhere.

I just ordered that. I need some middle work, never got back into as much exercise after Erin that I once did.

Re: OT: How's the weather?

Hmmmm....what would concern me having Craig as a personal trainer? Hmmmmm...wouldn't even matter if he was the best personal trainer in the world. I'd probably find myself in some sort of trouble.
