Re: Bonzai - Gardening

Very nice. I always wanted to try my hand at this hobby.
I wonder if it is posible to do this to my mangrove? It is really starting to take off now.

Re: Bonzai - Gardening

that pic and description is misleading
that is a buttonwood and they make wonderfull bonsai and do grow in mangroves BUT... they are from the dry mangrove shoreline and their roots cannot remain submerged in salt water the way the true mangrove trees can. I have been on collecting expeditions to the swampy mangroves in PR.... beautiful and scary place at the same time. unfortunately true mangrove trees will not make good bonsai

Re: Bonzai - Gardening

Buttonwood= White mangrove tree right?

Rhizophora sp is the red mangrove that is the intertidal species most folks associate with mangrove swamps and the huge roots that are submerged in saltwater.
Like booze said white mangroves grow well above the hide tide line.

(amazing the stuff you remember from one semester of benthic marine ecology)
