Yes it's a shame our GVT can't operate like that. It could but we'd have to basically start from scratch and get new officials in there because the majority of our elected officials are in debt up to their ears. If you can't balance your OWN checkbook why would we think you could create a "Balanced Budget" of money that you don't contribute yourself.

Check into FPU at work buddy. Once you get the fundamentals done you can get it started at your place of work and help your co-workers have a better life. Happy employees make a happy company and when they aren't worried about personal finance they can concentrate and do more FOR the company. It's a concept that works for everyone and anyone!!

Actually we cut our cards up in class doing a "Plasticesectomy" as a group. We each gladly took the cards out and cut them up into as MANY minuscule pieces as possible. It was a GREAT feeling (had mixed emotions but it WAS GREAT).

Ok has anyone here called a Credit Card company and tried to "Cancel" your credit card?

We paid our Capital One card off in full last night after having a HUGE balance on it for a LONG LONG time. When I paid it off last night I called customer service to "Cancel My Account" and was told "You'll have to call a "Customer Account Rep" during normal business hours. So I took down the number so I could call them today.

This morning I called the phone # and spoke with a "Customer Account Rep" in order to "Cancel My account". Well after I went through an extensive "Identification Process" she asked what she could do to "Help" me. I explained that I had paid my balance off in FULL yesterday and would like my account completely canceled and wanted this in writing ASAP. She started with the "spill" saying if I would keep it they would give me a VERY low interest rate. I thanked her for the offer but kindly refused because I don't "Do DEBT" any more. Then she asked if I used any OTHER credit cards and of course I said no. Her next statement sort of "Pi&&ed" me off. She said, "Mr. Newland in all honesty you "OWE" it to your family to always have a credit card in your wallet for emergencies and such. You don't want to disappoint or jeopardize your families well being do you?" That about got my goat. I kept my cool and explained that I "Don't do CREDIT" and I have my "emergency fund" fully covered and it's INTEREST free!

Then I was read the "Riot Act" of credit cards. Blah blah blah.... 30 days AFTER a Zero Balance you can request to cancel the account. If at any time during those 30 days any charges, fees or penalties are occurred on that account the 30 day period is negated until the account is paid to ZERO again.

I explained that my account IS at Zero and I want it LOCKED/CLOSED/SHUT down so that no charges can be added. She "checked" my account and said it was YET to be paid in full. The amount HAS been cleared through my bank but is YET to be applied to my account. The good news is that I have a confirmation # and a print out showing the confirmation #, date and time. she said there is nothing that can be done until AFTER the 30 days it can't be done! I was beside myself but I took her name and customer ID and made full documentation of this.

Who wants to bet that at SOME time in the next 30 days there will be some type of "Annual" fees or charges applied to my account? If that happens I will go ballistic!

It's not enough that credit companies are literally RUINING families and businesses across our country but they wont even let you out when you pay for YEARS without missing a payment! Crooks through and through!!

Seriously people, give "Living Debt Free" a shot! Worse case you can always go back into debt at any moment

Contact the BBB and let them know of the situation and if that doesn't work, in Oakland they have something called "Seven on Your Side" where the news station has a guy that is in charge of comsumer reporting and he will contact the business and offer them the bad press that comes with not keeping their word and generally they conform to his praposal and all is made well. You may want to see if this is available through your local news station.

That's terrible Allen! I closed one out a couple weeks ago and they were unusually FRIENDLY about it. I was nervous that they knew something I didn't, but every thing went smoothly. I had just paid it off a week earlier too. They told me thanks for being a great customer and please consider them in the future if I ever decided to get another card and that was it!

But that wasn't Capital One. I've never heard anyone invoke the 30 day rule, if that is not in your membership agreement, then you should raise some serious heck when you call back. I wonder if some of the credit card companies are getting nervous with the credit crisis and have instructed their customer "service" reps to keep people locked into their accounts at all costs...

On the flip, can you shoot me some info on your system? I'm pretty close to debt-free now, but any help to actually get there would be outstanding.

Mark I'm glad your "close-out" went smoothly and it SHOULD! No reason for them to NOT accept it and move on. But truth is many CC companies are very deceitful and will do anything in their power (and some things that are actually illegal) to get/keep your business and HIKE your rates. It's costing families their homes and breaking families up. I'm not saying "If you use credit cards you shouldn't have to pay it back" .... I'm saying they are intentionally CAUSING people to have to pay more to increase their own revenue. When the morals go out the window then what else would you expect?

It's funny.. I had a fairly "lucrative" second job a couple of years ago selling "Rainbow Vacuumm" cleaners and I quit it because the majority of people buying them were putting them on CREDIT. I couldn't justify asking people to put these things on CREDIT so I had to give up my side job.

Hey Al. I had a capital one and tried to close it out. I had to go through this questionnaire with the lady on the phone. I got so far and said I just wanted it closed out I don't want to giveout any more info. It almost turned into a shouting match. Apparently they do this so as not to close your card any way possible. I sent an email to the better business bureau and copied capital one on it outlining what horrible service they had. There was some other problem earlier in the year which is why I was closing out the card (paid it off ) and that was a nightmare too. I can't say enough negative things about this cc company. I STILL have to go check on the account to make sure it's closed, I have not received a letter yet to the effect that it IS closed.

Good for you kathy! Well I've been known to be "Long winded" in my typings and I usually get what I want. If they don't comply VERY quickly I can guarantee they will get a barrage of lengthy and detailed emails copied to them from MANY organizations! The cool thing is that the "Program" we've been talking about provides all the tools & forms along with who to contact and HOW to get these things resolved! I have no worries at all this will be resolved but it may take some more work on my part. As you can tell, I don't mind typing letters to bad *Grins!

I think the big seller for me was his view on giving. We have very little credit debt but some personal that needs to be addressed. I look forward to resolving it all. thought you would like to know Allen that your voice is being heard!

Frankie I don't know of many other things that you could have posted on today that would have made me ANY happier than this did. That just made my day buddy! I'm here if you have any questions or just want to "Talk the Talk" . As you probably already know, I can talk this 24/7 and have to make myself NOT preach it!! It's a blessing to get it all "in order" regardless of your current financial situation.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... this program will help ANYONE who is willing to try it. It doesn't matter if you don't have a penny to your name or if you're ridiculously wealthy. It will en-richen your life beyond your dreams. Frankie will a-test to the fact that by "en-richen your life" I'm talking about more than just your bank account
