NIU shootings

As I'm sure many of you have seen on the news there was a shooting at another college yesterday. This one has really got me thinking because it happened in my home town and current place of residence DeKalb, IL. Just putting this topic out there to see what the rest of the country thinks about what sadly seems to becoming a comon thing nowadays.

I know when the VT shootings happened there was some things looked at as far as security. I dont actually get in campus much(Im at the University power plant) but my wife said nothing major had changed.

My Aunt works for the UofI PD & I called her for the scoop today...this is all she would give me. his apartment was searched last night & they are getting search warrents for the University hospitol for his medical records. NIU investigators are in Champaign.

Re: NIU shootings

It actually got me and my wife talking. She commutes to a local private college. I asked her what she thought the school would do if something like that happened at her school. She said absolutley nothing. She started to worry. I asked her why nothing and she said they couldnt do anything. They dont have a school wide PA system. She doesnt think they have all the Students Cell #'s for texting. Most doors dont have locks on them. Its kind of a come and go school and they think that nothing like this will happen there. She said i could walk right in and no one would ever question me. I found it very disturbing. So we went over our own emergency plan. I basically told her if she is in fear of her life for any reason to get the H$LL out of there and go somewhere safe. i told her to find a room with a locking door if she can. Lock the doorm turn off the lights, stay quiet, and make a wall off chairs, desks, and anything else she can find in front of the door, move to the far side of the room and stay put. If she can text me and everyone else in her phone whats going on and where she is. Other then that there isnt much more she can do. i told her if she ever sees someone suspicious get help. Dont second guess it. its better to act and then second guess yourself later. Unfortuntley with society the way it is she needs to think about her saftey first, even it if meant making a fool out of herself for questioning a suspicious person. of course i dont want her confronting this person, but to tell a teacher, security, or someone of stature of it. and then get the H$ll out of there. LOL

Re: NIU shootings

University of Illinois is the same way. Anyone can walk just about into any building without questions. When classes change there are thousands of students moving from building to building. My wife works in administration & has an office just down from the UofI president, being in a high profile area worries her.

Re: NIU shootings

Just half an hour from me, I noticed it. I am not normally a caring person when it doesn't touch me personally, but I thought 'Wow, that could have been Sam.' Who is family and goes there. I have other family in DeKalb and the gunman could have gone anywhere. I was taken for a moment, theres a reason for all this. We need to find it.

Re: NIU shootings

i use to be for firearms. i understand everyones right to bare arms. but latley with all the shootings i really am close to throwing in the towel and thinking it would be better to adapt laws like other countries have and ban the right to bear arms. I mean think about it. if the rest of society didnt have a gun there is no reason for you to have a gun. then it would be up to law enforcement to carry guns and they would be the only ones that would need it. i think you would see a drastic amount of crime drop. but this is where it gets tricky. I understand people who hunt and then it worries me if something happened and we were attacked in our own country. im torn on what to do.

Re: NIU shootings

Ok, I'm not a big gun nut or anything. I don't even own one. No matter what the laws are, bad guys will have guns. It's already against the law to shoot people and this guy broke that law, why do you think he would respect a law that told him not to have a gun. I know this sounds crazy, but what if everyone had a gun. I like to think there are more good people than bad ones out threre. That kid would have walked on stage and got maybe one shot off before the whole front row would have taken him out. It seems like the criminals big advantage is being armed amongst the unarmed, I wonder what would happen if that wasn't the case. I have to go make the rounds on my compound, fix my generator, paint the bomb shelter, and stich up my camoflauge, talk to you later.

Definitely my argument for lack of gun control! Although I believe (in Florida at least) guns aren't allowed to be carried on school property (of any kind).

This whole things is a real tragedy, and being a college student myself these things really do make me more cautious when I'm attending class or on campus. The problem with colleges (in this respect) is that they are designed so that people can just walk in and out. It would be changing the whole nature of college if they locked everything down. How would I get into the business building to talk to an advisor? To talk to a professor during office hours? Would I get locked out of class if I was late because of work (most of my night school teachers are pretty understanding of this)?
