| Social Darwinism victim | OT: Kings Bay Naval Sub base info? Hi gang. Lookin' for the military input here or someone in the GA/Jacksonville area. Mike MIGHT be looking at Kings Bay base next transfer (of course, won't know for definite 'till April, but I'm thinkin' maybe I can bribe his detailer...) Can anyone tell me anything about the area as far as where to live? THere seem to be a lot of apts. in Jacksonville, pretty nice too, a bunch seem to have single family homes for rent as well. I know it's a military area. Thanks for any info you might have. Trying to plan a move is always an adventure.

| Manta Ray | Re: OT: Kings Bay Naval Sub base info? It's been to long since I was stationed there to be any serious help. I left there in 1987. We lived in Folkston and 20 years ago it was a nice little town, a little inland from the base and an easy drive, maybe 20 minutes. Take your bugscreen with you!!! You're gonna need it.

| Manta Ray | Re: OT: Kings Bay Naval Sub base info? Kingsland was the county seat I think and a nice little town. It was VERY little. There was a cute little seaside village named Amelias Island, here's a web site: Amelia Island.com from the Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach, Yulee Chamber of Commerce It may be touristy now, I don't know. Fernandina beach was great too. But again this is 20 year old memory.

| Social Darwinism victim | Re: OT: Kings Bay Naval Sub base info? Thanks for the linky! I haven't gotten to nassau county yet. I did check out fernandina beach, seems a bit pricey. Havent dug into it yet though. There's a lot of cookie cutter homes within short drive of the base, recent builds. I'm likin' the cutter though.

| Acropora | Re: OT: Kings Bay Naval Sub base info? Miss Kathy, I have lived in the Jacksonville/north east Fl area for many years.I can't advise you on housing costs. I live in Clay county which is south of Jax. I do know there is an awful lot of older homes for sale & rent in the area. It is growing very fast here. The northside, duval/Nassua counties is mostly new homes & growth/schools stores etc. Consider Georgia has a state income tax where Florida does not. Here in Clay we have a 7 cent sales tax. Cost of utilities is still reasonable. Our winters are mild compared to New Jersey but not tropical by any means. We may have a few frosts each winter. It's getting down in the mid 40's tonight for example. The summers are very hot & muggy. There is a strong Conservative Babtist influence in business & politics here. The "Good Ole Boys" still control a lot of what goes on in the area. We are not very high above sea level. So there are a lot of rivers salt marshes & swamps. The area has a beauty all it's own & a long history. |
