Re: Shuttle Launch

I was a space geek way back when and I have a friend that works at the Kennedy Space Center as a mechanical engineer. I've been out to the launch pad and saw the Shuttle being transported. I've been to the VAB too! Frank and I talked a little about it at MACNA!

Does Frank know your friend? That would be really funny.

Re: Shuttle Launch

I watched the launch on CNN
It nice that they still carry the launches live.

Re: Shuttle Launch

OPF=Orbiter Processing Facility. Where the orbiter is taken after a launch for "debriefing". Should I let someone else answer?

Re: Shuttle Launch

LOL
Well nobody else seems to want to play.
Speaking of the OPF it's pretty cool the way there is a cutout from the side of the building so they can get the tail into the building. Then it is suspended inside huge scaffolding. It is really wierd to walk underneath it.

When they put the orbiter on the back of the 747 how many bolts hold it on?

Re: Shuttle Launch

I was very suprised at this one.
3
There are only 3 bolts one at the nose and one on each wing. They are very large bolts but only 3 of them.

Why don't they launch the shuttle when it is cloudy?

Re: Shuttle Launch

They do launch the shuttle when it's cloudy. Wasn't it cloudy today when they launched?

Re: Shuttle Launch

Not really. That is one of the reasons why the weather decision has to wait until the last minute. They have to have a clear shot through any clouds.
It is all about visibility. They have to have good enough landing conditions at the time of launch should they have to abort after launch.

Re: Shuttle Launch

Ah, I get it! Perhaps the altitude of the cloud cover is a determining factor?

Re: Shuttle Launch

Perhaps. I know the exact location matters and the density. Never heard them talk about height but it may well play a part as well.
Did you know that when the orbiter flies back on the 747 they cannot fly through rain? There is actually another plane that flies in front of the 747 so they know in time to land before entering rain.
It has something to do with humidity but it has never made sense to me.

Yes, I agree, they do experience G Force during take-off and I would think most of the G Force the crew experience is during take off. In your statement you didn’t mention “acceleration” and traveling at 17,000+mph doesn’t give you G’s. Yes, acceleration does but really no more the say accelerating to 100,000mph.

Another fact is they experience around 3 G's during the flight. Guess that's not bad for going 17,000+mph.

Formula One drivers usually experience 5 g while braking, 2 g while accelerating, and 4 to 6 g while cornering. And this is all going what?, 200mph?
