Re: anybody wanna help a 210lb child?

I just did my taxes online yesterday
If you make less that 54,000 you can do that for free.
go to the irs website and they will tell you about free filing and what companies offer it in your state.

If you have the IRS direct deposit your refund into your bank account you can get your refund in 10-12 days.
Then you are not wasting your $$ on H&R

Re: anybody wanna help a 210lb child?

I use the method goldenmean recommends. It will not be as fast as H&R Block, but you will not have to pay them a cut, either.

It just depends on whether you are in that much of a hurry or just do not want to do it yourself.

Re: anybody wanna help a 210lb child?

My kids do it through the IRS site for free. I assume you need the cash right now? You need to balance your need for cash with what fee they charge. If the fee is too high it's not worth it, and I'd suggest waiting so you get the total amount due to you.

That's my mom side speaking, of course!

I second this option - used it several years in a row.

You'll need to ask them. They could have different rates depending on your tax return. Call and ask before you make a decision... it could very well be 20%!

Re: anybody wanna help a 210lb child?

Bob, we go through a friend, and he usually charges us $120. And that's with a discount!! We're usually talking multiple states' W2s, though, with the military and all.

Re: anybody wanna help a 210lb child?

Doing it for free on the website kicks butt. I would say if you have never done them yourself before and you're worried, go to H&R and spend the 100 bucks. Next year, you can go to the website and do them yourself because then you would know how the system works.

I just take a mess of papers to my eccentric tax guy (he's nuts but does a great job) and whala! another year under the belt.
