Speaking from experience, when you are surfing and a dolphin pops up in front of you or near you out of seemingly no where, it scares you just as much as a shark. Dolphins are surprisingly large and if you don't see them out in the water before you paddle out, it can kinda shock you. although seeing a shark in the water tends to get you out of the water quicker One of the benefits on surfing on the East Coast is we don't have all that great white shark bait hangin out at the marinas :P
