The goffin is the same. She cracks me up as she still is in the keening stage and will sob sounding exactly like a baby when I hold her tight and rub her head.
Amazing birds for sure.

Re: OT: Birds!

He is a Caique, his name is Yummy, and this guy is an absolute CLOWN! My gosh, this guy is an acrobat and friendly! Picca, our eclectis, isn't quite sure about him yet but we're keeping them apart for now.

He has already made himself right at home though.

Re: OT: Birds!

Hey Terry, I would recommend a quarantine period for your new buddy. Separate room from Picca. A month or even 3 weeks should be OK, longer is always good. Same issues as the tanks -- disease spread. Usually anything that's going to show up shows up in 3 weeks.

Re: OT: Birds!

Jason, this guy is hilareous! He is in the same room as the reef too so I can sit and enjoy the reef and Yummy at the same time.

Kathy, we have them in separate rooms for now. Yummy is going to the aviarian vet on Wednesday for a thorough exam, including blood work. Poor guy...

Booze, our eclectus is a real sweet heart too. He has a really sweet personality ONCE you get him out of his cage. I just have to suffer through a few bites in order to get him out first though. He is getting a lot better about coming out though. He hasn't said a word yet but it really does sound like he is trying sometimes.

I'd also heard that you don't want a male and female in the same cage because they would most likely pair up and then they wouldn't let you anywhere near either of them. They would also only communicate with each other.

That's what I had heard, at least.

That's pretty much true for most birds. Once they pair off they're not really interested in being pets anymore. There are exceptions. And sometimes you're lucky, they'll be horrible to you come breeding season and OK the rest of the time. A pair in the same room, right together, separate cages, is usually OK.

Glad to hear the new buddy is happy!! They really are clowns. Worse than lories sometimes. ;D

Re: OT: Birds!

I had a pair of SI ekkies, in the same room, and they were fine. But it is true, Once paired, no longer pets. I still have two sun conures, housed together, and one tiel (my daughters bird), but in the past I have had an umbrella cockatoo, blue crown conure, male & female SI ekkies, tons of tiels, and a few quakers. I used to run a bird forum too. I basicaly switched hobbies though. The tank is much quieter! If anyone knows one wanting two suns, mine are for sale as well. I have never had them DNA'ed, and I assume they are both males, due to no egg production.. But they are sweet, and love to cuddle. Asking $500 for both + shipping. (If I remember, shipping runs about $100 TWA). I can post pics if anyone is interested. They are about 4 years old now. I hand fed both of them. They are un-releated, bought from two different breeders.

Re: OT: Birds!

I should mention, actually... my african grey (definitely daddy's bird, although she'll cuddle and all with me, but when daddy comes in I'm chopped liver, actually good with my daughter too) is kinda sorta "paired" with his roomie Senegal, Houdini. "Deens" is about half Ollie's size, no doubt in my mind a male, and based on Ollie's head and lack of red on the vent the grey's a she. SO... they live in the same cage (both Africans) and Deens decides to cuddle up to Ollie. Ollie basically tolerates him, they feed each other, right now they're in the little cage in the bathroom (winter quarters) and I can't clean the bottom of the cage (yeah, ew) because Deens has decided it's nesting time. He sits on the bottom, which is totally shredded newspaper, and does that grey "digging" thing they do. If I try to feed or clean, look out!!! my hand is fair game. Ollie will sit and sleep on the bottom too, they kinda take turns (no eggs obviously. I think if Deens tried anything Ollie would just kick him off and go back to sleep...)

It's a riot. Except for the fact that the senegal, who was "iffy" to begin with, has totally turned against me. I can pick him up with a towel. I can manage to get wings clipped myself with no help still but for nails I need another person. With Ollie, I actually file her nails. It's funny, she grumbles the whole time, tries to eat the nail file, but she won't tolerate a clipper.
