| Manta Ray | Re: OT: Women of RS Thread My husband would throw a fit if he didn't get to go, even though, when we were first married he was content to not ever go anywhere. I visited him when he was in Germany and I paid for us to go everywhere but it was a blast. Went to the Bavarian Alps, Munich, Nurnberg, Dachau...(it was a lot cheaper in those days, so my bank wasn't completely drained). Said he would have never seen half if those places if I wasn't there. I plan all of our vacations because actually researching where we are going is not his thing. If I had to worry about finances, I would never get home to see my family. We do a short vacation every year, this year we are going to Colorado. Then after he returns from school, we are trying to get home for a couple of weeks before he leaves the country.

We stayed at an English owned, gated compound in a small town, Duncans in a parish named Trelawny. Everyday we would set out to one of the local "clinics" to do our handy work. The "clinics" were open air, cinder block rooms with no windows or doors. The locals would line up waiting to have painful teeth removed. Then they would give us a big smile and start chewing on sugar cane! It's a beautiful island. Be sure to go to Dunn's River Falls and Negril on the West coast. You'll see some of the most spectacular sunsets there. There is a restaurant there, high up on the cliffs, I think it's called Joe's. You can sit out on the deck, overlooking the cliffs, watch the cliff divers, sip on a dacquiri and watch the sunset. On a clear day, they say you can see Cuba! You can also purchase art made by the local people. I got a beautiful sculpture of a Florida Spiny Lobster carved from Rosewood for a steal. Also, I'm not a coffee drinker, but I understand Jamaican Blue coffee from the coffee plants grown in the mountains is some of the best around. Every time I think of Jamaica, the Beach Boys song, "Cocomo" pops into my head! | |

| Madame Klanganator | Re: OT: Women of RS Thread Thanks for the suggestions, Scott. That Joe's sounds wonderful! I want to do some of these trips off the resort. However, two of my friends have not traveled before and they are very reluctant to leave the resort. I may have to go by myself if the one remaining friend doesn't want to go either. I'm taking an extra suitcase with books for children, and some health care items to donate to an orphanage that's near the resort we're staying at.

| Elegance coral | Re: OT: Women of RS Thread Scott just an FYI...Jamician Coffee is the second best coffee in the world. It's served at the White House and goes for an astounding 120 per lb. Barb if you have a chance to taste it first hand go for it...it should be allot cheaper there..it's letting getting REAL kona coffee in Hawaii. BTW I don't know where the number one coffee is in the world but let me just say that it involves cats and beans (if you want to know more PM me.)

| Acropora | Re: OT: Women of RS Thread Barb, I'm small enough now to be stowawayed in one of your suitcases if your up for smuggling me through customs. On the off-chance they open up the suitcase, I can flash a massive mammory and probably get through ![]() I want to travel SO badly but Tommy's pretty apprehensive to travel anywhere outside of the US. I'm hoping I can talk him into Italy for our 10th anniversary...it'll take us that long to save up for it! |

About traveling outside the US; I've found if you are a nice person who tries to speak the native language and who has made an effort to understand and USE local customs about manners/politeness there usually will not be a problem. The US citizens I see having problems are the stereotypical "ugly Americans" who tromp everywhere shouting their American-ness with no effort or respect for local customs, and no manners or politeness. With the poor value of the dollar now it's really expensive to go anywhere that is on the euro. Better to wait for western Europe until (hopefully) the dollar gains some strength.

| Manta Ray | Re: OT: Women of RS Thread The cost would be the only thing making me hesitant to go abroad for vacation. Why is Tommy apprehensive...most vacation places are safe.

| Acropora | Re: OT: Women of RS Thread Don't get me wrong, I love him dearly but he's a close-minded, nationalistic American who is very vocal about the way he feels. He wouldn't try to speak the language and he's the typical "steak and potatoes" kind of guy who isn't very open to trying new things, food and customs wise. But we both love Italian food so I figure that an Italy trip would be easier for him. |
