Sounds like I wouldn't be so worried if they pay up or not but If my employer had to do that as in incentive in the first place to stay, hey you don't quit or get fired, to me odds are against you in that case. I'd personally update my resume & start looking. A place that fires many people isn't a good feeling to work for, I've had so many jobs that at times wondered if I'd ever settle down. Not trying to sound negative here but that isn't a secure feeling when a boss tells you something like that & $500 is nice but I bet you pay taxes on that & then get what is left, also If he had really good intension's, why not give you a raise, even if small but at least it would be a move up & make you feel more secure & want to stay. JMO

Lawyer may charge you the 500 to resolve the issue.

If you are willing to push this, have a heart to heart with your boss. If you get no satisfaction and feel that the big screwdriver is coming and you have nothing to lose, ask around, find a friend of a friend who is a lawyer. Send a copy of the email to your boss and CC: the lawyer ( cc: The Law Firm of Dewey Cheatem and Howe, LLC) but privately ask the lawyer to take no action.

Bob, if you value your job I would approach your boss casually about it first, and take little or no action if he does not follow through.

threatening your boss might get you the $500 now, but it will certainly prevent you from getting anywhere in the future.

Drew I agree, but if the organization is paying retention bonuses they anticipate downsizing. If the job is going to disappear, ask nicely first. Then, if the company downsizes you, ask nicely with lawyer on CC:
