Re: iRobot

I haven't seen any good reviews for them, but it still might be fun...
They're pretty small, only use brushes, NO suction, so, while they MIGHT be ok for hard floors, they apparently don't work well on carpeted floors. (there are different models with different features, so YMMV...

Re: iRobot

I looked at them, they were a bit expensive for me, can get a dyson for not much more.
When I researched them it appears there is an entire community devoted to modifying these things for all kinds of different functions. I'm a bit of a geek, but not quite geeky enough to get into modifying vacuum cleaner robots

Re: iRobot

We have a Dyson Animal, and it's the best dammed vacuum we've ever owned.
My daughter bought one first, and I laughed at her, and made all kinds of fun of her for buying some trendy colorful P.O.S. vacuum...till one day, she brought it to my house and shut my mouth for me...
At the time, we had a housekeeper once per week, and we had her vacuum the floors with our "high-dollar" Electrolux canister, then my daughter vacuumed right after her with the Dyson...
OMG! EVERY ROOM... she filled the canister in the Dyson with dirt and pet hair...I was astounded!
At the time, we had two fur-balls...I mean cats, and one little dog, (we now have 2 little dogs) and unbeknownst to us, we were walking on a carpet of pet hair...
Needless to say, we went out and bought a Dyson for ourselves...

When I bought it, I was able to use a 20% coupon at Linens & Things, and that saved me $110. on the purchase price, PLUS, Dyson was offering a free "Car-Care kit" for those who bought between certain dates. It included a long flexible nozzle, a rotating vacuum thingie that they call a turbine head, a stiff upholstery brush, and a couple of adapters. Nice addition to a great vacuum.
Granted, it's not automatic like the Roombas, but it does a fantastic job...

Re: iRobot

Yep Dyson is a sweet vac. No Dyson for the carpets here though. Too much $$$ for me. That being said the Dirt Devil Reaction is a good alternative. I find it holds up to what i expected from it.
My best vac is my back pack Mega Vac! Big $$$ but for a hard wood flooring company it is an essential. My wife loves to use it at home also. They do make a lighter one for the home.

Re: iRobot

I have a roomba and it just broke, but prior to that, I LOVED it! I used it in a large room (about 40 X 40) which had a large center rug and hardwood everywhere else. I turned it on when I went to work and when I came home, I emptied the canister. That thing picked up all the pet hair and sand that the dogs dragged in. I loved it and will probably get another one after I finish getting all my tank stuff.

Re: iRobot

Well, let's see.
I hve 2 Roombas and a Scooba. I do however have lots of pets and tile everywhere but the bedrooms. The Roombas are programmed to come on at noon each weekday but to use the Scooba I have to take up my area rugs so that doesn't get used as much.
Great for tile or wood. Still good for short carpet but not as much.
If you have pets and tile or wood floors I would absolutely get one. Last Christmas there was a deal out where if you bought a Scooba you got a Roomba for free. Since I have one big room that is several inches lower than the rest of the house we went for it. Now there is one in the back room and one for the rest of the house.

Re: iRobot

Be careful though. They have been known to go haywire. I think sometimes they program them with the software for their tactical robots instead.

Here's just one story

I showed my wife and her comment was, "I can just see what will happen when the dog gets a hold of that thing."
