| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | OT: Nature in reverse I wasn't sure what cagegory to put this under so chose OT. I only wish I had a camera to prove this since I doubt anyone will believe me. Anyway I had about an hour to waste yesterday so I stopped in at the LFS just to look around. I was looking at the harlequin shrimp they have had for a while and could only find one of the pair so I asked them if they sold the other. They said no they are both still there. Well they come look with me and we could all only find one. Then someone decided to turn over the serpent star in the next tank over. Guess what the serpent was having for dinner? The harlequin was already dead so no saving him but we were all shocked to see a starfish eat a harlequin instead of the other way around. Anyway, just thought people might like the story. It certainly suprised me and the LFS owner. I really need to get a new pic phone so I have something to take those unexpected pics with.

| Reef Addict (hopeless) ![]() | Re: Nature in reverse I don't believe you. Just kidding It's possible the harlequin could have been injured or sickly or just in the wrong place at the wrong time and the serpent star was just being an opportunistic feeder.. If left alone (which we don't do good at) Mother Nature will take VERY good care of herself. I had a similar experience as a child. I have a "Lady slipper Lizard" and I adored. We were going out of town and I didn't have anyone to come in and feed her. She ate meals worms and others small live insects that I would catch and put into her cage. Well we were going to be gone for two weeks so in infinite wisdom I simply dumped half a tub of meal worms into her cage. I figured she's eat as she got hungry over the next two weeks and all would be good. So we leave, have our vacation and come home two weeks later. I come rushing into the house to see "Lady" figuring she might be starting to get hungry by now. To my surprise and HORROR "Lady" was DOA and partially consumed by a bunch of strange looking beetles that I have never seen in her cage before. All we could figure is that I over loaded her cage with meal worms (or something else I introduced into her cage from the wild) and during the over feeding something matured from a worm into a group of beetles. Either she expired from over eating (probably not) or the Hunter became the Hunted and the sheer numbers got the best of her since she really had no place to retreat to in order to get away from the onslaught. Also let it be known that a gerbil will indeed eat a small lizard but a larger lizard puts up a LOT better fight and can kick the but (remove tail) of a gerbil.(insert images of a pair of lizards and a gerbil in a Tonka Toy Rescue Squad here). Good catch Lynn. Now go get your camera phone before we get mean about it ![]() Allen
