OT: Do you smoke?

Woodstock, our local hospital and fitness center (where wife works) went 100% smoke free last year and it's been GREAT! At first many people were upset but over the last year the group health assessment has gone up. If I'm not mistaken their insurance underwriters have even re-evaluated their group plan. That's unheard of.

About where do those that MUST smoke go? They walk a LONG ways in sunshine, rain, snow sleet.. it doesn't matter... and for them.. My heart goes out to them... many thing it's a matter of just will power.. that's NOT the case.. it's a chemical addiction and some people just CAN'T quit. It's been proven there are different degrees of the "habit" gene and some people's mind wont LET them quit. It's just sad and I love them all just the same. I just don't let them smoke around me in any form but I don't think bad of anyone.

FFRankie, good for you for NOT smoking around your family. I have some lung "issues" now and have never smoked. It "appears" highly likely that 2nd hand smoke was a MAJOR contributor to these "Issues".

And no it can't be PROVEN that smoking CAUSES cancer but many studies are under way that lead to the findings that people who are more "prone" to cancer have a GREAT elevated risk of it. It's known that some people smoke their whole lives and apparently NEVER have any significant lung issues. Maybe they are just genetically cancer resistant but you can't tell Me something that has over 140 KNOWN carcinogens doesn't significantly contribute to cancer in those who are PRONE to get it.

I smoke and have for many many years.
However I do try to be considerate of non smokers.
Other than the smoking room in an airport or a designated smoking room in a hotel, I couldn't tell you the last time I smoked inside a building. Even if it is allowed, I just don't. Not even my own house.
I smoke in my car only not the family cars and never with the kids in the car. I try to move away from non smokers when smoking outside or at least exhale in the other direction.
Basically I am saying that it is my decision to smoke but I do try to be considerate of those who have made the decision not to smoke.

All of the restaraunts in Chapel Hill have been 'smoke free' for a few years. The UNC hospitals have recently banned smoking within 100' of their buildings. Humm.. I wonder if that includes chewing tobacco? I bet they go through a lot of nicotine patches!

I do not like to be around smoke now but I don't 'judge' someone if they do smoke. My husband smokes but never in the house. On long trips in the car it is a bit annoying when he 'has to smoke' but it's not much of a temptation. It seems the 'second hand smoke' does give me a strange craving the next day but a small piece of chocolate helps

when I was about 12 I took a little puff of a cigarette and for the next 2 weeks I felt like my chest was on fire. That was the last I ever touched a cigarette. One puff was enough for me. yuck

I am a smoker. Ready to quit though. I went to the family doc last month and got a script for chantix. He told me to pick a date (august 29th, My b-day) and plan to quit that day. He told me to start taking the chantix 7 days before quitting day. Guess what? Thats today! first pill down! He also told me on my last day smoking, to smoke like a freight train, and to make myself sick with them. This way my last experience with a cigarette will be a bad one, and thats what I will remember. Its kind of funny this thread popped up at this time.. he also told me that statistics on the chantix at the end of the script, 90% quit. those same people 6 months later, 50% still dont smoke. and at the 1 year mark, 30% of those still dont smoke. But he said the reason they still prescribe the chantix, is that 30%.... which I hope to he!! I am one of. I always told myself I would quit when I started to feel any effects from them. Well, the every morning caugh has started. so its time. I have smoked since I was 16.. so 13 years I have been hooked on, and at the same time enjoyed them. But its time to quit. I plan on being smoke free very soon! and I picked a day I would remember.. so in a few years, I will be able to say "I quit XX years ago, and never looked back". Wish me luck!

I used to be a heavy smoker. Before dad died of Lymphoma he made me promise on his death bed that I would quit...I took my last pack, tossed it in the trash can and never looked back....that was almost 6 years ago

Same boat here. Started quitting 1 week ago. Using some chew but that goes this week. My main problem is I LOVE BEER and love to smoke when I drink. We will see how it goes. I will always smoke a cigar now and then.
