OT: Any one keep freshwater Mollies?

I'm doing a science fair project on Mollies. They will be in freshwater for a day then slowly moved up to normal sea water level parameters. I have been looking up care for them but does anyone have any suggestion? Thanks

Re: Any one keep freshwater Mollies?

Oh and I'm currently thinking of a catchy title for the project... its hard to do but heres one. If you can think of something that will help me (usely I think better that way)

"Posidons Gates"
"The Gateway to the Sea"
"Ms. Mollie and the Salties"

I vote for #3 on the title. I used to have mollies in my fuge.. they thrived. Just fed them flake, and they also ate some of the macro, and pods..VERY slow acclimation is the key.

You might want to look up Stingrays. Or freshwater stingrays. I know that some people have acclimated them into there salt fish only tanks in the past.

Re: Any one keep freshwater Mollies?

Just so you know, it is cruel to do this since there systems are not designed to filter out the salt in the water and they can dehydrate over the long term.

Cruel to the mollies? Mollies are native to Salton-Sea california... The sg is MUCH higher than the ocean there..

Re: Any one keep freshwater Mollies?

Hmm i did not know that.
Mollies are often portrayed as a difficult fish to maintain and are commonly only kept as a freshwater fish. They are supposed to require brackish water, high temperatures, special foods and frequent treatment for fungus and other infections. However, we have found mollies to be quite easy to keep and breed in the marine environment if you keep in mind a few essential aspects such as fairly good water quality, proper nutrition, and their temperature requirements. The salt tolerance of mollies allows them to live in water ranging from completely freshwater to completely marine, which makes mollies potentially compatible with a wide range of setups. This is fairly unusual, as most fish are compatible with only freshwater, brackish water or that of only saltwater environments. This ability allows mollies to live in a variety of coastal environments.

Here's a good link on them for you.

Re: Any one keep freshwater Mollies?

yeah, most people put them in a tank with no salt additive. Rock aquarium salt designed for freshwater works well. That is why they are recomended to be in a brakish water, they like salt.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Re: Any one keep freshwater Mollies?

I love my Molly. He's a black sailfin. I moved him over to my salt tank to get it to cycle. He loved it in there. Unfortunately, he has a bit of a Napoleon complex so when I added my Pink Skunk clowns he was a little too nosey and got his tail chewed. He's getting moved back to the fresh tank. He's in solitary for a few days. I like the second title you have...or...Changing tides. He eats everything. While he was in the salt, he ate veggie flakes, pods, regular flakes, sand sifted, and algae from the side of the tank. Very big eater. Very big pooper. I feed him twice a day but he would eat anytime if I let him. I think he prefers green foods but he'll eat just about anything. I acclimated him through the day and watched his breathing when I changed from fresh to salt. The molly is my favorite of all of my fish.

Re: Any one keep freshwater Mollies?

just to add my 2cents. mollies have a harder time acclimating to fresh water than salt, its alot more stressful on there systems.
