Re: Inclinations of a no-filter media system.

hey guys what up, the reefsanctuary thing shows the new current most recent threads not the ones suscribed to and that link took me to my page but thats what i wanted. can one of you post a link to your photo page, i want to see if it takes me there or links me to my page?

i am still figuring this out myself.

i love the reefspace page but you can spend some serious time on it, thats what my girlfriend keeps telling me, anyway.

Oh but it is true.. and i have no photos on there yet so i cant do it, could someone else? If it were like a regular myspace page it might be familiar, but im sort of glad its not. More of a challenge and it has a different feeling to it.

Re: Inclinations of a no-filter media system.

Seems easier than telling them the story, plus you can get them drinks while they read it!

Hey (everyone) I found a really cool website that promotes aquaculture for the aquarium trade/hobby. They always have stuff in stock and it would help keep people from harvesting wild life. I'm buying Cerith snails from them. They are based in Maryland and have a "state of the art" facility. Check the page out here:

They are also one of our sponsors. Great company from what I hear. Many people report great experiences buying from them.

Re: Inclinations of a no-filter media system.

Am a bit late in joining the discussion, but just wanted to encourage you. When in the states, all of my previous reef tanks were reliant on heavy equipment / filtration use. But once I moved to the Philippines, and found that there is NO equipment available other than some powerheads, I had no choice but to run my tank as is. Which means, no mechanical (floss, pads, sponge) filtration at all. As such, my entire system runs on three powerheads and some lights. One large powerhead to act as the sump's pump, and two in the main tank for water movement. Thats it. Been running great for more than three years now and the corals love it. Which I attribute to any and all life and food particles generated by the system being left in the system for everythings use, from the corals, sponges, tunicates, pods on down to the gazillion other micro organisms. I never add supplements or additives except on the very rare occassion that I can not do a water change, then I dose a bit of Kalkwasser to maintain calcium. While I do water changes at least once a week, I only do so because I happen to be at the ocean anyways, but have seen my system run for three months with no water changes and it never missed a beat. The middle tank is a live rock refugium where I do not allow any predators (fish) and very few herbivores. While there may be a bit of macro algae growing in it, I have never trimmed or removed any macro algae as a means for nutrient export. I also feed my tank up to 20ml of liquified krill/shrimp each and every day for the corals, although a lot of other life benefits as well. I might spend 30 seconds a day on maintenance, which only involves adding some freshwater top off and pouring in some food.
In other words...lol, it is very feasable, if I can do it, anyone can.

Great set up! This is something I plan to experiment with in my new house once it's built!!

Thanks for the insight into your system and the pic!!

Chuck...very inspirational and your website rocks! I love the temp and salinity info, very spot on with other research I have found. Very jealous you are able to collect your livestock locally, but marvel at the the effort you take to recreate the environment they were taken from.

Thanks for sharing and being a great resource for RS!

Re: Inclinations of a no-filter media system.

Thanks! This week is seeing a lot of changes being made to the main tank as I try ever harder to recreate what I see on the natural reefs. Monday I took out about 1/3 of the rocks to create a different landscape and get away from the "shelf" or wall look. That and about four species of corals have also been returned to the ocean, placed within my urchin study site so that I can babysit them..lol. Tomorrow I will be collecting a good amount of Pavona corals to fill in the blanks and will be on the hunt for a suitably sized / colored favia. Am just trying to make my tank more species specific to mimic those species that I find crowded in together as they would be in my tank. I'm using this photo as a basic guide as to what species I will keep:
