| Dragon Moderator ![]() | Re: Inclinations of a no-filter media system. Thanks EagleEyes. I was really into them when they were really popular and still have a lot of the varieties. Unfortunately the available selection is becoming less varried now. I have found that most of them are extremely hardy. the only ones I haven't been able to keep going are the apple green ones. Of course they were really really tiny when I got them so it could have been too much change for the tiny polyps.

| Tubeworm | Re: Inclinations of a no-filter media system. To again quote Engs method, "Lee Chin Eng, initiated many of the concepts and techniques that are fundamental to successful reefkeeping. Mr. Eng lived near the ocean in Indonesia and used many of the materials that were readily available to him from this source. "Living stones," which have come to be known as live rock, were used in his systems as the main source of biological filtration. He also used natural seawater and changed it on a regular basis." If you live near the sea and have unlimited natural sea water available to do regular water changes you can keep even the most unbalance reef system designed balanced. You can even keep a lot of fish alive in a 5 gallon bucket doing enough water changes. Keeping nitrogen exported with live rock and only a small bioload is easy, it's the phosphates and other waste that slowly build, and nutrients that are slowly depleted, that can lead to sudden failure. I use to believe keeping a reef system would be easy by do exactly what you stated, using a very simple natural approach. My thinking now is, "why would I build a compost system inside my home to process waste if I can simply flush the toilet?"........ ![]() Last edited by ldrhawke : 10-13-2005 at 09:13 PM. |

| Scopas Tang ![]() | Re: Inclinations of a no-filter media system. I think you should go for it and document your experience, being mindful of the lives of the tank inhabitants, of course. I remember reading something that Bob Fenner wrote a while back (perhaps in his book) about a tank in Asia (perhaps Mr. Eng's tank) that used only natural sunlight and water changes. I believe it could be done if you can grasp the bio-chemical aspect of nature, and be willing to committed to the process. Good luck. -RY

A walk to vacation, A necessary sedation, You wanna feel at home cause' you belong. i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~ | |
