intake modification on nano cube

what do you guys think about cutting the slots on the nano cube all the way to the top so it will skim off the stuff on the surface of the water. for those that don't know here is a picture of the intake, when full it is about 3/4 of an inch below surface level

Re: intake modification on nano cube

Is that a 12 or 24 gallon? I thought the new 24g came with a surface skimmer? On my 2005 24 gal I just leave the water level a little below the intake.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: intake modification on nano cube

can't quite get a camera back there and far enough away for a pic. but it comes out into the tank about 1/4" where the oval is. so a side view would be like

| <---- thats the top of the tank
|
.|
.| <--- thats the oval shape that it sucks the water in
.|

I agree, I would just lower the water a little. See how that looks and if it looks ok, I would stay with that.

I just got an 06' model and it came w/ the surface skimmer. Ive seen the mod your tlkng bout and its a good DIY for a surface skimmer.

Re: intake modification on nano cube

yeah mine was one of the first 06's out, its also a 24 gallon if that makes a difference. i'm currently making a DIY protein skimmer, i'll post pics of it and how well/bad it works when i'm done. very cheap, two pop bottles and a tornado maker!
