Question JBJ Nano Cube Advice

I have been looking at one of these cubes for my living room (12g/mini reef setup route). I have seen some really innovative uses of these tanks. They look like a lot of fun!

What are the opinions on these tanks? I was looking at the deluxe model. Do you have to add any additional equipment or does what it come work fine? How long does it take for one of these tanks to cycle? Any other comments would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!
Rougiem

Sound set ups, I have seen quite a few altered to fit the needs of the aquarist.Mostly flow issuses, lack of enough.Dremmeling the overflows and increasing size or number of powerheads has seemed to do the trick.I have seen some awesome set ups using the cube. My own advice is on a tank that small water changes should take place weekly. In the confines of 12 gallons a lot can go wrong quickly, so having water perameters in check and routine as possible can save you some money in the long run.
What are you thinking about keeping in your nano?Cycles are still 3-5 weeks so sorry to burst your bubble, post some pics of progress.

Thanks for the advice Sharkbait!

My LFS is very informative and helpful. I could also talk to them. I really like the advice from the members on this site!

I was thinking of some softies(polyps), inverts(crabs, snails). Any other suggestions?

Cheers!

How is it set up? Photos? Skiming and circulation are even more important in a Nano setup IMHO.

Skimming would be difficult to do on the JBJ cube if you use their canopy just no room. I think one small fish or tank bred seahorses would be fine without a skimmer you just would have to do frequent WC's and keep a close eye on temperature/evaporation.

I like the looks of these, but have heard of a few of them cracking where they make the corners. No one has ever been sure WHY, they just do. Fortunately, it seems to affect a very small number of them.

Thanks everyone..

DobeJazz: Have you made any modifications to yours? added any additional equipment?

I have heard of people adding a skimmer(which one?), but I think you are right cheeks, no room...

Cheers!

You modify the hood to accomodate, I think the guy removed the trickle filter and added a small powerhead.

Criag: Thanks! I have not set it up yet or purchased it. Just doing some "homework" on it! More information the better!

Cheers!

I've not modified the tank at all. I have to top off every day and try to do 2-3 gallon water changes every week for maintenance the LFS had said to do 5 gallon water changes once a month but all the advise here seems to be less more often and it seems to be working. The only problems I have had have been poor livestock choices. The tank has only been up since february and I have been going quite slow.

current livestock
yellow clown goby
percula clown & BTA
twin spot wrasse
Fire shrimp
fox coral
finger leather
GSP
Xenia
galaxy (sp)
Long tentacle plate

Ditto, very nice set up.

Nanos are generally one SMALL fish set ups. The general rule of thumb is one inch of mature fish per five gallons. That would be one 2 - 3 adult fish in a 12 gallon. The clown alone will grow to 4 - 5" as an adult. Too small an invironment can stunt the growth of the fish. The better the filtration, the more fish a system can tolerate.

Three fish in a nano is really pushing the envelope.
