| Limpet | Cured or Uncured Live Rock What are the pros/cons to cured or uncured live rock? My wife is getting a new nano tank that we will be filling with water from our existing reef tank but I was wondering if the live rock we put in it should be cured or uncured? Seems like there's a lot of life on/in the uncured rock.

| Neon dottyback | Re: Cured or Uncured Live Rock Unless you get the live rock right out of an existing reef system, and into the new one in an hour or two, you should consider the rock uncured. This is true even if you paid for cured rock. I agree with you. The uncured rock does tend to have more life on it. I'd go that way. I also prefer to cure the rock outside the tank, using another large container. That way the nitrates that get produced while the rock cures get left behind when you place the rock into your main tanks. |

| Midas Blenny ![]() | Re: Cured or Uncured Live Rock I got some cured rock from a local guy and it was loaded with all kinds of fun stuff--I even got some mushrooms and a frogspawn! Granted, the rock had been sitting in one of his tanks for about a month, but still. Like Dave said though, uncured tends to have more stuff on (and in) it, but sometimes you get stuff you don't want ![]()

| Has been struck by the ban stick | Re: Cured or Uncured Live Rock This is the method I recommend for curing live rock. Live Rock - Tampa Bay Saltwater Aquacultured Live Rock - The Package Setup All but part to is applcable, part two is for adding the critters to your tank after the initial cycling with the live rock. The criiters in this case are just the cleaning crew. |
